Sebastian Vettel: "Er is de laatste paar jaar meer eenheid onder de coureurs"

Viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel gelooft dat Formule 1-coureurs de afgelopen drie tot vier jaar meer verenigd zijn geworden. Op sociale media is dat duidelijk geworden toen de Formule 1 op zoek was naar een jonger publiek, en mensen als Lando Norris helpen zeker om de populariteit van de sport bij jonge mensen te vergroten naarmate zijn aanwezigheid op sociale media groeit.

Toen Vettel in 2007 met BMW Sauber in de Formule 1 begon, waren de gesprekken anders dan nu. In gesprek met Autosport zegt de Duitser: "Ik denk dat toen ik begon er wat meer gesprekken en berichten waren die in het nieuws kwamen. Nu denk ik dat er meer berichten en andere vormen van berichten zijn waar ik niet zo veel van af weet."

"Het is zeker veranderd ten opzichte van het verleden. Er wordt vaak gezegd dat de coureurs meer eensgezind waren en dat hun horizon misschien iets dichterbij lag. Er waren niet zoveel vluchten om uit te kiezen, dus ze zaten allemaal op dezelfde vluchten, in dezelfde hotels."

Helaas heeft de pandemie ertoe geleid dat coureurs met hun teams in aparte ‘bubbels’ moeten blijven, wat een impact heeft gehad op de eenheid van het grid.

Tegenwoordig meer eenheid

Vettel is ervan overtuigd dat de coureurs tegenwoordig meer 'verenigd' zijn dan drie tot vier jaar geleden. De 33-jarige coureur legt uit: "Omdat je meer bij je team bent en je leven leidt, is er een natuurlijke scheiding. Maar ik denk dat je nog steeds kunt zeggen dat we de afgelopen drie of vier jaar meer eensgezind zijn dan voorheen."

Vettel wees erop dat één van de gebieden waar coureurs de grootste eenheid vormen, te maken heeft met de regels en voorschriften van de sport en hoe ze allemaal hun mening uiten en delen. De Duitse racer noemde het 'de grootste eenheid' tijdens zijn F1-carrière: "Als het gaat om bepaalde vragen, zorgen over banden, regelgeving, de toekomst van de sport, onze situatie als coureur. Ik denk dat dat positief is, maar de vorm van communicatie is veranderd."

Sowieso is de hele F1 een grote politieke poppenkast met allemaal tegengestelde belangen. Zowel technisch qua regels als financieel. Ook sportief op de baan. Elk incident wordt uitvergroot en lopen coureurs constant te klagen.

Wat is dat voor een raar verhaal? Begrijp dat de rijders het redelijk eens zijn over de regels. Verder snap ik er helemaal niets van en heeft de rest van dit artikel niks met de eenheid van coureurs te maken. Waar dan wel mee, ook geen idee.

  Lijkt me niet zo moeilijk. In tegenstelling tot vroeguh gaan de rijders onderling vriendschappelijker met elkaar om. Buiten de race om welteverstaan. Je kunt ook stellen dat het nu één grote familie is (tikkie overdreven). Dat was vroeger wel anders...
