Max Verstappen: "Sochi geen favoriet van ons, concurrentie achter ons zal dichtbij zitten"

Max Verstappen hoopt de vervelende nasmaak van de Grands Prix in Italië zo snel mogelijk weg te spoelen. Tijdens de Grand Prix van Italië in Monza en de Toscaanse Grand Prix in Mugello viel de Nederlander twee keer achter elkaar uit. Slechts één keer eerder kwam het voor in de F1-carrière van Verstappen dat hij twee keer achter elkaar uitviel. Dat gebeurde in 2017 toen hij drie maal achter elkaar de finish niet wist te halen; Canada, Azerbeidzjan en Oostenrijk.

Afgelopen weekend had de Formule 1 een racevrij weekend, maar met de Grand Prix van Rusland komend weekend hoopt de 22-jarige Nederlander weer de finishvlag te zien op zondag. Verstappen kijkt kort terug op de race in Mugello: "Ik denk dat het voor iedereen in het Red Bull-team goed was om een weekend vrij te hebben, maar ik kijk ernaar uit om weer te gaan racen, vooral omdat ik in Mugello geen raceronde heb afgelegd. Het is natuurlijk niet fijn om een raceweekend zo af te sluiten, vooral omdat ik denk dat we een goede kans hadden op meer dan gewoon het podium, maar dat moeten we achter ons laten."

Positieve stappen

Het team van Red Bull heeft met Max Verstappen de problemen besproken. Verstappen is van mening dat er in Mugello, ondanks de uitvalbeurt, positieve stappen zijn gemaakt: "We hebben de problemen natuurlijk als team besproken en iedereen werkt in dezelfde richting en probeert te strijden voor elke kans in elke race die we krijgen. Ik denk dat we op Mugello enkele positieve stappen met de auto gemaakt hebben en het was natuurlijk goed om Alex voor het eerst op het podium te zien. We zullen blijven vechten voor overwinningen en podiums."

Rechte stukken Sochi

De Russische Grand Prix zal vermoedelijk weer een race worden die gedomineerd zal worden door Mercedes. De lange rechte stukken zijn niet in het voordeel van Verstappen: "Het zal niet makkelijk worden in Sochi en het is geen favoriet circuit van ons, met de lange rechte stukken. De concurrentie achter ons zal dichtbij zitten. De baan is best uniek, want de meeste bochten zijn 90 graden, wat we niet vaak zien. We moeten dus ervoor zorgen dat de afstelling precies klopt, vooral voor sommige langzame bochten om het uitgaan te optimaliseren op weg naar de rechte stukken. Het is niet de gemakkelijkste baan om op in te halen, maar hopelijk hoef ik dit weekend niet veel inhaalacties te maken en kunnen we een goed resultaat scoren."

Of nu de baan niet geschikt is voor de Red Bull of andersom maakt eigenlijk niet uit. Feit is dat ze het dit jaar en zeer waarschijnlijk ook volgend jaar weer niet waar gaan maken. Afwachten maar of ze het in 2022 wel gaan redden en niet ook dan weer achter de feiten aan gaan lopen want dat begint zo langzamerhand toch wel een dingetje te worden bij Red Bull. Want laten we wel wezen, bijna raak is nog steeds helemaal mis.
Zou Max dan toch die allerbest gewaande coureur ter wereld zonder wereldkampioenschap blijven zitten? De toekomst zal het ons leren. Zo simpel is dat.

  Max is in ieder geval op zeer jonge leeftijd de F1 ingekomen, dus hij heeft nog wat jaren voor de boeg om zijn titel ambities na te jagen, maar of het hem ooit bij Red Bull gaat lukken? Geen idee. Maar een verkeerd getimede overstap kan ook funest zijn daar periodes van dominantie altijd een soort van cyclus zijn, wanneer is die periode van mercedes ten einde...
