Riccardio gelooft niet in podium: "We gaan vechten voor P4"

Renault-coureur Daniel Riccardio zal de race beginnen vanaf de derde startrij. De goedlachse Australiër verwacht niet te kunnen strijden voor het eremetaal. Volgens de 31-jarige coureur zal het eerder een hard gevecht worden om plaats vier.

De oud teamgenoot van Max Verstappen begon goed aan dit weekend in Sotsji met twee keer een top drie klassering in de vrije trainingen en de snelste tijd in Q2, terwijl het niet zijn favoriete baan is.

"Ja, ik was blij", zegt Riccardio na het behalen van de vijfde startpositie, een evenaring van zijn beste kwalificatie in Rusland. "Wanneer je jezelf bovenaan ziet staan, denk je 'misschien gebeurt het vandaag'. Niet voor pole position, maar wel voor plek drie of vier. In Q2 kon mijn ronde bijna niet beter. In Q3 had ik het lastig en verloor één tot twee tienden."

Toch is er weinig reden tot klagen. "Op deze baan heb ik tot nu toe weinig succes gehad. Om dan het hele weekend erg snel te zijn, is zeer positief."

Het Franse team liet zich in de afgelopen Grands Prix al vaker van voren zien. In Toscane was Riccardo op weg naar zijn eerste podium voor Renault totdat de Safety Car roet in het eten gooide. In Sotsji wordt het een ander verhaal. Een gevecht met Perez lijkt meer voor de hand te liggen.

"Ja, dat wordt het gevecht. De top drie start op de medium band van wat ik heb begrepen. Het wordt dus echt een gevecht om plaats vier."

De toekomstig McLaren-coureur hoopt voordeel te behalen bij de start. "Ik heb de F2-race bekeken en de verkeerde kant van de grid zag er beter uit."

Tot nu toe is zesde zijn beste resultaat op het Sochi Autodrom. Dat gebeurde met Redbull in 2018. Sinds 2014 is de Australiër al drie keer uitgevallen.
