Pierre Gasly: "Ik focus niet op Albon, wat er met hem gebeurt is zijn probleem"

Pierre Gasly van AlphaTauri zegt dat zijn focus ligt op een team dat zijn kampioenschapsambities kan koesteren, en niet alleen op het heroveren het stoeltje van Alexander Albon als de nummer twee bij Red Bull. Vervangen door de Thai voor de Belgische Grand Prix van 2019 na een teleurstellende eerste stint bij het team, is Gasly sindsdien geweldig bezig, met veel commentatoren die hem tippen voor een terugkeer, aangezien Albon op dezelfde manier ondermaats heeft gepresteerd tegenover Max Verstappen.

Beste coureur B-team Red Bull

Gasly, die onlangs een Formule 1-racewinnaar werd bij de Italiaanse Grand Prix, zegt echter dat het niet zo eenvoudig is als zijn plek terug te krijgen. Tegen motorsport-total.com zegt de Fransman: "Ik ben niet gefocust op Alex. Wat er met hem gebeurt, is niet echt mijn probleem, dus daar ben ik niet echt in geïnteresseerd."

"Ik heb de afgelopen 12 maanden ongeveer 70 punten gescoord met Toro Rosso en AlphaTauri, wat veel meer is dan wie dan ook in dit team. Sommigen hebben de kans gekregen om naar Red Bull te gaan en hebben minder gescoord dan ik. Maar het is duidelijk dat als je wereldkampioen wilt worden, je de leider in het team moet zijn. Dat is het eerste criterium."

"In mijn situatie wil ik ook vechten voor topposities, en ik denk dat Red Bull de veel betere auto heeft. Maar ik moet goed nadenken om te weten waar ik de voorkeur aan geef."

Teamgenoot Verstappen

Red Bull heeft er zeker geen moeite mee gehad om Verstappen te steunen als hun leidende coureur, en sommigen speculeren dat dit in het directe nadeel is van degene die de garage naast hem bezet. Gasly suggereert in ieder geval dat zowel team als coureur een andere aanpak zouden kiezen als er een tweede keer komt.

"Wat wel duidelijk is, is dat Red Bull en ik allebei hebben geleerd wat niet werkte. Ik denk dat we de dingen anders zouden doen om ervoor te zorgen dat we zo competitief zijn als we zouden moeten zijn - aan hun kant en ook aan mijn kant. Ik denk dat we nu veel beter zouden presteren. Dat weten zowel Red Bull als ik."

Desalniettemin heeft Red Bull onvermurwbaar vastgehouden aan Albon, terwijl Gasly erkent dat hij een goede plek heeft gevonden bij AlphaTauri.

"Ben ik blij met mijn prestatie bij het team? Ja. Ben ik blij om met dit team samen te werken? Ja. Is het mijn doel om te vechten voor betere posities in de Formule 1? Ja, je moet overal rekening mee houden en op dit moment kan ik niet veel meer doen, denk ik. Uiteindelijk is er geen goede optie en geen slechte optie. Ik denk dat beide opties goed zijn. Ik presteer momenteel redelijk goed."

Oftewel RBR kan beter maar met 1 wagen mee doen,soms kan je er ook bij neerleggen dat iemand anders beter is.

Voor Gasly zie ik het liefst een route zoals die een beetje te vergelijken is met Sainz. Stel dat Gasly bijvoorbeeld over 3 jaar (als Alonso echt te oud is) als Fransman bij een team als Renault/Alpine terecht zou komen, dan is dat helemaal prima en wellicht ook best interessant voor die jongen.

Bij AT zit hij ook wel beter als bij RBR. Daar draait alles toch om Max en zal hij de rol als 2de correur opgelegd krijgen. De auto word gebouwd om Max, het team draait om Max. Bij AT kan hij meer zijn eigen input laten gelden en zo zichzelf in de etalage te zetten. Wie weet waar hij terecht komt. Op de slachtbank langs Max moet je als correur niet willen. Je staat met 3 0 achter voordat je begonnen bent.

Vind Gasly een prima gast. Alleen als het even goed gaat, denkt Pierre dat hij de reïncarnatie van Senna is. Die jongen moet gewoon zo doorgaan en dan komen er vanzelf nieuwe kansen

  Precies mijn idee. Pierre zou misschien met een wat sympathiekere reactie kunnen komen wat betreft Albon. Niet veel meer dan een jaar geleden zat hij in hetzelfde schuitje, en werd 'ie vernederd door zijn teamgenoot en stond 'ie te huilebalken.
  En nu denkt 'ie na een paar goede resultaten idd dat 'ie weer helemaal het mannetje is.
  Mijn gok is als Gasly en Albon in 1 team rijden, dat er weinig tot geen verschil is.

  Lip dicht en rijden met die auto.
  Hij is zeker niet de allersloomste in het veld dus kan in de toekomst vast nog ergens hoge ogen gooien.
