Abiteboul over aanstaande tattoo: "Nadenken hoe groot en waar"

Zoals bekend heeft Renault-teambaas Cyril Abiteboul een weddenschap afgesloten met Daniel Ricciardo voor het zetten van een tattoo als de Australiër een podium zou behalen. De Fransman heeft vertelt nog tijd nodig te hebben voordat de tattoo er komt.

De weddenschap ontstond vorig jaar in Silverstone na een aantal biertjes. "Daniel kwam naar mij toe om zijn nieuwe tattoo te laten zien. Ik vroeg aan hem hoe je tot zoiets komt en welke mentaal proces je nodig hebt om zo'n tattoo te plaatsen."

Abiteboul legt verder uit: "Ricciardo zei tegen mij, 'ik liep langs een tattoo shop en besloot er één te nemen'. Ik antwoordde: 'Oké, laten we er één zetten als je een podium behaalt. Ik doe er één'. Ik ben een man van mijn woord en moet alleen nog nadenken over de grootte en plaats. Ik ben denk ik de weddenschap aangegaan omdat ik zelf nog geen tattoo heb en het niet bij mij past."

De relatie tussen Abiteboul en Daniel Ricciardio was daarna bekoeld door de onverwachte overstap van de coureur naar McLaren. "Onze communicatie was een beetje negatief toen wij erachter kwamen dat hij ging vertrekken bij het team. Tussen ons waren er eerlijke, emotionele en oprechte gesprekken. Dat doet Daniel nog steeds binnen het team."

De teleurstellingen zijn weer overgegaan naar blijdschap en trots. De Renault-teambaas heeft nu veel lof over de Australiër. "Het team zou niet hetzelfde zijn zonder Daniel. En ik denk dat we door het pijnlijke seizoen van vorig jaar, wij meer gingen pushen. Ook nam ik mijn verantwoordelijkheid door maatregelen te nemen. Nu vinden we ons in een veel betere positie dit jaar, maar ook volgend jaar. Daniel is gewend om daarmee om te gaan."
