Sportief directeur Ferrari: "Drie van onze F2-coureurs maken kans op een F1-stoeltje"

Ferrari heeft een van de beste jeugdopleidingen. De beste coureurs uit de Formule 2 van Ferrari, lijken allemaal kans te maken op een overstap naar de Formule 1. De sportdirecteur van Ferrari, Laurent Mekies, twijfelt niet aan de talenten die de Ferrariacademie heeft klaarstaan om volgend seizoen over te stappen naar de Formule 1.

Drie coureurs maken kans op een stoeltje bij verschillende teams met Ferrari-motoren. Mick Schumacher, samen met zijn Formule 2-rivalen Callum Ilott en Robert Shwartzman, strijden allemaal om een plek op de grid in 2021. Zo zou Mick Schumacher kansmaken op het stoeltje van Antonio Giovinazzi, die momenteel bij Alfa Romeo rijdt. Schumacher zal dan plaatsnemen naast Kimi Raikkonen, de ervaren coureur waar zijn vader nog mee geracet heeft. Ilott en Shwartzman maken kans op een plekje bij Haas F1. Alleen lijken die twee minder kans te maken, want het team heeft al jarenlang de coureurs Romain Grosjean en Kevin Magnussen. Wie er dan voor wie moet plaatsmaken is onduidelijk, wel is duidelijk dat het Amerikaanse team meerdere namen hebben om te tekenen voor 2021.

Ferrari levert de motoren aan het team van Gene Haas, maar is niet gemachtigd om een coureur zo te plaatsen. Dat is bij Alfa Romeo wat makkelijker, want daar is eigenlijk één stoeltje voor het Italiaanse team. Alleen Ferrari kan wel iets willen, maar dan moeten de coureur wel goed genoeg zijn. Bij het beoordelen van de situatie zei Mekies: "Als je iemand hebt die snel is, is het makkelijk te beslissen. Ik denk dat we een zeer goede relatie hebben met onze partners [Alfa Romeo en Haas], maar het komt erop neer dat de jongens snel genoeg zijn?”

Ze moeten het zelf laten zien

Hoe graag het team het misschien wil, moeten de coureurs het zelf ook willen en de intentie tonen dat de overstap naar de koningsklasse mogelijk is. "Dat is wat we proberen ervoor te zorgen, dat ze hun potentieel kunnen uiten en zich zover kunnen ontwikkelen. Ze moeten gewoon snel gaan en iedereen zal ze willen. Zo is het."

Mekies voegde op de vraag of ze snel genoeg waren voor de Formule 1, het volgende toe. "Ja, we denken dat ze F1-materiaal zijn en daarom winnen ze. Zijn ze ooit F1-materiaal voor Ferrari? Het hangt er sterk van af hoeveel ze zullen ontwikkelen. "

Maar goed dat ze het woordje kans gebruiken. Schumacher zie ik zeker in de F1 verschijnen bij Alfa Romeo. Iliot heeft zeker een kans om bij Haas aan te sluiten (als het korting bedrag voor de motoren en hulp hoog genoeg is)> Maar ik denk dat er voor Swartzmann nog geen plek is in de F1. Maar die kan nog een jaar F2 hebben om daar het kampioenschap binnen te halen en dan bij Alfa Romeo aan te schuiven.
