Robert Kubica keerde in 2019 terug in de Formule 1 na een zware crash tijdens een rally-wedstrijd. Hij kwam bij het team van Williams, waar het niet goed ging. Hij wist niets te presteren en werd in 2020 alweer aan de kant gezet voor Nicholas Latifi. Dit jaar nam hij een rol als reservecoureur op zich bij Alfa Romeo en is de Pool actief in het Duitse toerwagenkampioenschap DTM.

De 35-jarige coureur stond al lang niet meer op het podium. Afgelopen weekend op Zolder lukte het hem dan eindelijk wel en daar was hij blij mee. Hij heeft verder nog geen plannen bekend gemaakt voor 2021. Een verslaggever vroeg ernaar, maar daar wist hij nog geen antwoord op te geven. "Dat is een moeilijke vraag. De DTM verandert zijn DNA een beetje, maar het biedt nog steeds een hoog raceniveau en ik hoop dat dat zo blijft. Ik moet voor mezelf kijken wat er mogelijk is en wat ik zou willen doen. We moeten wachten, want corona heeft alles een beetje vertraagd en we hebben nog wat tijd nodig om onze beslissing te nemen."

Groot verschil met 2010

De Pool kreeg ook een vraag over wat er veranderd was ten opzichte van 2010, toen hij de Formule 1 verliet en even later de horrorcrash meemaakte. "De grootste verandering was waarschijnlijk het verschil in aanpak tussen de kwalificatie en de race", vertelde hij de Nederlandse publicatie Formule 1. "Vroeger was dat verschil niet zo groot. De auto was 130 kilo lichter, met veel minder brandstof aan boord in plaats van brandstof voor de hele race zoals nu. Dat verschil is enorm", zei hij.

Kubica meent dat het nu niet altijd om de hoogste snelheid gaat, maar om wie het slimste met de snelheid en afstand om kan gaan. "Nu is soms een beetje snelheid verminderen de snelste manier om de finish te halen, hoe paradoxaal dat ook mag klinken. Het gaat er nu om dat je jezelf meer onder controle houdt, wat onnatuurlijk is. In de andere klassen moet je er het maximale uit halen, maar in de Formule 1 moet je soms minder doen om een goed resultaat te behalen."

Zou ook interessant zijn, als Kubica uit de doeken zou doen waarom zijn comeback niet is gelukt.

Heus een erg goede rijder en sympathieke kerel, daar heeft het allemaal niet aan gelegen.
Maar de blamage van zijn terugkomst had ie, achteraf gezien, zichzelf moeten besparen.
Een worstelend team en constant een teamgenoot die je te snel af is omdat je zelf de snelheid nét niet meer hebt.

  Nee hoor. Als je mijn posts terugkijkt van de tijd dat hij zijn eerste test reed nog vóórdat hij tekende bij Williams riep ik al dat het vergane glorie was.

F1 verandert inderdaad wel en zeker naar performantie en gewicht. Algemeen genomen ging het altijd voor een groot stuk over behoud van materiaal maar dat verschuift zich in functie van periode .... Nu zijn dat voornamelijk de banden, vroeger was dat eerder het verbruik of de motoren. Een wedstrijd indelen en uithalen wanneer dat het belangrijkste is heeft altijd een belangrijke rol gespeeld. Zo was Prost daar indertijd ook heel sterk in. Consistentie zal altijd de sleutel zijn tot succes voor het behalen van een WK, niet enkel pure snelheid.

Wat er van zijn comeback ook geworden is, ik ben nog steeds blij voor hem dat het überhaupt gelukt is. Hij heeft voor zichzelf en aan de wereld kunnen tonen dat zijn ongeluk hem er niet heeft onder gekregen en hij kon terugkeren waar hij thuishoorde. Daar mag hij zich voor altijd groots door voelen.
