Daniel Ricciardo: "Denk dat we dit jaar nog een podium gaan halen"

Daniel Ricciardo vertrekt in 2021 naar McLaren, maar dit seizoen rijdt hij nog voor het Franse Renault. Hij wist een podium te behalen afgelopen raceweekend in Duitsland. Voor het eerst sinds negen jaar wist het fabrieksteam weer een podium te behalen. Voor Ricciardo was het tweeënhalf jaar geleden toen hij de Grand Prix van Monaco won voor Red Bull.

De 31-jarige coureur is blij met de progressie van Renault en blikte terug op zijn geweldige resultaat. "Het was een geweldig gevoel om op het podium te staan", zei Ricciardo. "Het voelde alsof het mijn eerste keer daar weer was."

Ricciardo moest er lang op wachten, maar dat was eindelijk voorbij. "Het voelde speciaal omdat het zeker zou komen. We hebben dit jaar een paar vierde plaatsen gehad, zo dicht bij de derde plaats, en het voelde alsof het zou gebeuren. Doorzettingsvermogen loont en ik ben erg blij voor het team en het harde werk dat iedereen nu al een paar jaar heeft verzet. Maar we zijn nog niet klaar. Ik denk dat er nog een podium voor ons inzit voordat het jaar voorbij is. We stoppen niet met werken en we rusten hier niet alleen op. We hebben een doel in zicht."

Zin in Portugal

Ricciardo heeft als een van de weinige coureurs wel ervaring op het Algarve International Circuit, dat voor het eerst in de F1 zal worden gebruikt voor een raceweekend. "De eerste keer dat ik daar reed was in 2009 in de Britse Formule 3, en daar behaalde ik dat jaar de titel. Het was de voorlaatste ronde, ik stond in de eerste race op het podium en eindigde als vijfde in de tweede race, maar het was goed genoeg om de titel te pakken."

"Eerder dat jaar had ik daar ook mijn eerste kennismaking met een Formule Renault 3.5-auto. Het is een circuit waar ik toen erg van heb genoten, dus ik weet zeker dat het nog beter zal zijn in een moderne Formule 1-auto. Er zijn goede hoogteverschillen en snelle, vloeiende bochten. Het is een heel goed en leuk circuit."

voor of na de race zal hij er zeker op kunnen staan , mocht het voor allemaal naar wens verlopen zal het echter moeilijk zijn .

  Dit zal hij ook weten. Renault (lees: Ricciardo, want zie ocon het niet halen) zal alleen het podium halen als minimaal één van de grote drie rijders uitvalt of ver wegzakt. Ricciardo is wel de ideale man om dan te profiteren en het is eigenlijk verbazingwekkend dat dit pas 1 keer gebeurt is dit jaar. Ben overigens bang dat de stap van Ricciardo naar mclaren hooguit een stap opzij is.
