Max Verstappen is realistisch: "Ik ben blij als ik het maximale heb behaald"

Max Verstappen kan maar moeilijk races winnen. De 23-jarige Nederlander probeert elke race te maximaliseren, maar door de dominantie van Mercedes wordt dat niet altijd beloond.

De Nederlander kon dit seizoen maar één race winnen en finishte elke uitgereden Grand Prix op het podium. Goede statistieken voor de Nederlander, maar het liefst wil de Red Bull-coureur meer. "Het is natuurlijk het leukst op de bovenste trede, maar je moet ook realistisch zijn over de vraag of dat mogelijk is of niet", zei hij op de Talking Bull-podcast.

"Soms ben ik blij als ik tweede of derde ben, alleen omdat je weet dat je er het beste uit hebt gehaald en het andere team gewoon te dominant is om te verslaan. Je moet het gewoon altijd waarderen om op het podium te staan. Het is altijd goed om de champagne te spuiten."

Oude bekers beter

Verstappen wist tot nu toe 38 keer op het podium te staan, datzelfde aantal trofeeën kwamen ook mee naar de fabriek in Milton Keynes. Op de vraag of hij de bekers net zo mooi vindt als vroeger, antwoordde Verstappen: "Om eerlijk te zijn, denk ik dat de trofeeën 10 of 15 jaar geleden beter waren. Als ik naar de trofeeënmuur in Milton Keynes kijk, denk ik dat de trofeeën vroeger een stuk beter waren. Ik denk dat ze nu soms een beetje saai zijn. Maar aan het eind van de dag vind ik de trofeeën niet zo erg. Het is belangrijker dat ik het resultaat krijgt. Ik heb ze thuis, maar ik herinner me de momenten liever gewoon."

Door het coronavirus mag er maar weinig tot geen publiek bij de races zijn, iets wat vroeger heel normaal was. Of Verstappen de fans voor het podium mist, antwoordde hij: “Ik mis de sfeer als ik op de grid sta voordat ik in de auto spring, en ik moet zeggen dat we in Rusland en een klein beetje in Mugello fans hadden, wat erg leuk was, maar toen ik eenmaal mijn helm opzette concentreerde ik me gewoon op mijn race.”

  Als je eerst had gelezen wat er nog meer aan nieuws was dan had je gezien dat het Off topic nieuws wat je dacht te brengen al eerder was dan dat van Verstappen. Dan ben jij zeker super slimpie

Het is en blijft knap om elke race gewoon het maximale eruit te persen. Zonder hem was dit seizoen al helemaal niet meer om aan te zien.
