Max Verstappen dolt met Albon: "In het algemeen groter of ergens anders?"

Max Verstappen en Alexander Albon mogen dit weekend hun kwaliteiten vertonen op het Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Het circuit stond oorspronkelijk niet op de Formule 1-kalender, maar wel op de omgegooide kalender van de F1 door het coronavirus. Voor Max Verstappen kan het een belangrijke race worden, hij kan namelijk dichterbij de tweede plek in het coureurskampioenschap komen. Voor zijn teamgenoot Albon is het ook een belangrijke race, hij moet zich namelijk bewijzen voor het stoeltje van 2021.

Er wordt veel gespeculeerd over een vertrek van Alexander Albon bij Red Bull Racing. Hij zou volgens voormalig F1-coureur Christijan Albers te klein zijn om in de RB16 te rijden, maar als daarna gevraagd wordt, antwoord Max snel: "In het algemeen groter of ergens anders?". Hij grapt hiermee naar de geslachtsdelen van de Thaise-Brit. Albon is een beetje trager dan zijn teamgenoot, maar voelt zich op zijn gemak bij het team. "Ik krijg veel steun van de jongens. In termen van druk: er is altijd druk. Niets extra's. Max is alleen overal kleine beetjes sneller."

Voor Verstappen is het circuit niet helemaal nieuw. "Het is een leuk circuit. Het is leuk door de hoogteverschillen. Ik heb hier eerder een GT-auto gereden, maar dat was puur toeval. Ik wist toen nog niet dat het circuit op de kalender zou staan." Er werd gevraagd of Verstappen nog plannen had. "Ik ga niet uit eten. Je moet niet op zoek gaan naar het virus."

Tot slot werd de Nederlander gevraagd of er nog updates komen. "Voor ons is het belangrijker dat we gewoon blijven leren over de auto die we nu hebben", reageert Verstappen. "We kunnen voor volgend jaar niet echt veel veranderen, dus alles wat we nu doen en leren, zal ons helpen voor volgend seizoen. Wat Mercedes doet, zal voor hen ongetwijfeld goed werken, maar hoeft nog niet per se voor ons goed te werken. We blijven dus pushen en komen er volgend jaar wel achter waar iedereen staat."
