Alex Albon: "Ik voel geen extra druk maar voelde wel veel wind"

De positie van Alexander Albon staat al geruime tijd onder druk. De Thaise Brit blijft vooralsnog in zijn stoeltje zitten bij Red Bull Racing, wat naar alle waarschijnlijkheid te maken heeft met de Thaise aandeelhouders van Red Bull. Dat hij, in tegenstelling tot Gasly in 2019, wel langer de kans krijgt zou dus wel eens een politieke lading kunnen hebben.

Toch draait het in de F1 altijd om statistieken en goede resultaten. Dat laatste kan Albon niet overleggen richting de top van Red Bull en ook niet richting de pers. De druk wordt alsmaar groter en teambaas Horner heeft gezegd dat als Albon plaats moet maken, het Oostenrijkse team buiten de deur gaat kijken. Daarmee zet hij de deur open voor Sergio Perez of Nico Hulkenberg.

Dit weekend zal Albon opnieuw moeten presteren en dat deed hij enigszins tijdens de kwalificatie. Zoals bijna altijd zat Albon ook dit keer 5 tienden achter Verstappen en kwalificeerde hij zich op de zesde plaats. Na afloop waren er echter weer de gebruikelijke excuses van Albon.

De teamgenoot van Max Verstappen zei na afloop dat het lastig was, ondanks zijn andere bandenkeus in Q3: "Het is een lastig circuit voor alle teams en coureurs omdat er veel wind staat, dus dat voelde ik wel. De gaten tussen de coureurs zijn vrij groot dus het was daardoor lastig."

"Ik koos ervoor om op de medium banden te kwalificeren en dat was best goed maar toen ik omschakelde naar de zachte banden veranderde het. Die run was daardoor een beetje met dubbele gevoelens. Ik voelde deze kwalificatie niet extra druk."

"Morgen zal ik de race benaderen zoals ik altijd doe en dan zien we wel wat er gebeurt, fingers crossed."

Albon wil echter toch nog even terugkomen op de moeilijke omstandigheden en vertelt: "In het nieuwe asfalt zit nog altijd veel olie en dat is er nog niet uitgereden. Als je op de zachte banden rijdt is het echt onmogelijk om te rijden, ik glij echt alle kanten op."

  Ik mag toch echt hopen van niet. 0,5 seconden opnieuw... aan de andere kant... Als Verstappen slechts een halve tiende voor Leclerc eindigt... dan was of zijn ronde matig of de RB komt hier niet uit de verf. Voor Albon zou dat 2de beter zijn dan te weten dat die 0,5 nog een 0,7 zou kunnen zijn

  Axel. De ronde van lecler was sowieso goed. Die Ferrari hoort op P8-10 dus staat vast. Ik doel meer op de factoren die wel bij RB liggen. Maar ook de racing point is bijvoorbeeld dicht bij max. Terwijl hier normaal wel een iets groter gat tussen zit

  Hulkenberg kwalificeerde zich in Engeland met de Racing Point voor Max.
  De kwalificatie is dit seizoen nooit echt een makkie geweest voor RBR. De race is een ander verhaal, tenminste als je het over Verstappen hebt. Albon is het hele seizoen al in gevecht met de Racing points, McLarens, Renaults en Ferrari. Misschien maken de race skills van Verstappen wel het verschil t.o.v. de rest.

Nou, misschien is dat juist zijn probleem.
Zijn verklaring in de laatste alinea slaat ook nergens op want dat geldt voor iedereen.
