Brawn over historische mijlpaal Mercedes: ''Ze hebben het verdiend''

Formule 1-baas Ross Brawn is zeer onder de indruk van Mercedes haar historische prestatie van afgelopen weekend. Nog nooit heeft een renstal in de koningsklasse zeven constructeurtitels achter elkaar gewonnen. Ferrari werd daarmee gepasseerd in de ranglijst. Het team uit Maranello won vanaf 1999 tot en met 2004 zes titels. Brawn was toevalligerwijs onderdeel van deze Italiaanse succesformatie.

In zijn column op de officiële website van de Formule 1 tekende de 65-jarige op: "Mercedes is sinds 2014 met een indrukwekkende periode bezig. Ze hebben het record afgepakt waarbij ik betrokken was gedurende mijn tijd bij Ferrari. Wanneer je zulke dingen bereikt, weet je dat op een dag het record weer gebroken kan worden."

Toch kent Brawn geen rancune. Tenslotte stond de Engelsman aan het begin van het succes bij de Duitse renstal. "Het feit dat het is verbroken bij een groep mensen die ik goed ken, waarmee ik nauw samenwerkte en het meer voelde als een vriendschap, maakt het nog meer speciaal."

De voormalig werknemer van zowel Ferrari als Mercedes heeft niets meer dan lof voor de huidige successen van de Duitse renstal. "Ze hebben alles verdiend wat ze hebben bereikt. Ik wil Toto Wolff feliciteren voor zijn goede leiderschap, hun rijders voor het leveren van de prestaties en Mercedes voor de visie."

Brawn denkt wel dat Mercedes door alle regelaanpassingen van volgend seizoen en daarna flink wordt getest. "Om constant te blijven met de financiële, sportieve en technische veranderingen voor de komende jaren, wordt een uitdaging. Het zijn geen kleine aanpassingen en kunnen in potentie het competitieve landschap veranderen."

Ross Brawn werkte bij Ferrari van 1997 tot en met 2006 en bij Mercedes vanaf 2010 tot en met 2013. Met zijn eigen team Brawn GP, uit nood geboren doordat Honda ermee stopte, won de Engelsman in 2009 met een Mercedes-motor sensationeel als debutant de rijders -en constructeurstitel.

Om jaar na jaar het extreem hoge niveau opnieuw te verleggen, net dat wordt niet altijd naar waarde geschat. Dit team wordt eerder door nogal wat F1 fans verguisd en dat is niet netjes ifv hun prestaties.

Alle F1 fans willen meer competitie natuurlijk, enkel zit het probleem eerder bij andere teams die hun zaken niet op orde hebben dan wat anders. In tegenstelling tot andere dominante periodes stelt MB zich nochtans het meest flexibel op, denk daarbij oa aan de kwalificatie instellingen voor de PU maar ook de budgetcaps die eraan komen en beperkingen qua windtunneltijd voor de toppers. Dat hadden alle andere toppers in hun periode nooit toegelaten - dus ja "chapeau" voor de nieuwe uitdagingen die ze steeds aangaan, de positieve instelling en een dikke proficiat voor deze prestatie(s) als gevolg.

Ach welja. Brawn klopt voornamelijk zichzelf op de borst met deze uitspraak.
Stond hij aan de basis van het succes van het huidige Mercedes ? Veel mensen denken ja.
De timing en de kunstmatige voorsprong van Mercedes in het hybride tijdperk, waardoor ze zoveel titels konden binnenharken, zonder al te veel weerstand ? yep.

Intussen knoeit 'ie in z'n huidige functie fijn als amateur verder.
