Kimi Raikkonen verrast landgenoot Mika Salo

Mika Salo heeft toegegeven verrast te zijn dat Kimi Raikkonen zijn Formule 1-carrière ook volgend jaar zal verlengen doordat hij voor 2021 zijn contract heeft verlengd bij Alfa Romeo. Voormalig F1-coureur Salo voorspelde onlangs dat de lange carrière van de nu 41-jarige wereldkampioen van 2007 aan het einde van dit seizoen eindelijk zou stoppen.

Tegenover de krant Ilta Sanomat zei Salo: "Ik was behoorlijk verrast, dat zal ik niet ontkennen. Ik was er vrij zeker van dat het nu zou eindigen. Maar het lijkt niet te eindigen, we zullen zien hoe veel jaar hij nog actief zal blijven in de F1."

De verwachting was dat Raikkonen of zijn teamgenoot Antonio Giovinazzi zou vertrekken bij Alfa Romeo, zodat misschien de deur zou openen voor een Ferrari-junior of twee, waaronder Mick Schumacher. In plaats daarvan blijven beide gevestigde coureurs op hun plek.

Driver of the Day

Raikkonen werd zelfs uitgeroepen tot de officiële 'coureur van de dag' op Imola terwijl hij naar een indrukwekkende negende plaats reed.

"Kimi reed heel goed, dus ik denk dat hij alleen zal stoppen als hij daar zin in heeft. Hij heeft ook een grote marktwaarde voor de Formule 1, dus nu Alonso terugkomt, is het goed dat er een mix is van oudere grote namen bij de junioren", zei Salo.

"Ik denk dat Kimi's motivatie er is, want hij hoeft alleen maar te rijden. Alfa Romeo heeft hem een volledige vrijstelling gegeven van alle PR-optredens die hij meer dan wat dan ook haat, dus alles wat hij hoeft te doen is autorijden."

Ten slotte denkt Salo dat Alfa Romeo zelfs goede vorderingen maakt met zijn chassis. "Als Ferrari een paar upgrades krijgt aan de motor, dan lijkt de auto van Alfa Romeo eigenlijk beter te werken dan die van Ferrari. Het zou volgend jaar een goed seizoen voor ze kunnen worden", zei hij.

Eigenlijk te oud om nog echt mee te doen voor de grote prijzen maar op enthousiasme en ervaring en puur talent wel nog steeds beter dan 75% van de grid.

Topgast en wat zouden we de boordradio's missen!!!
Ik had eerder verwonderd geweest waarom ze hem niet meer zouden erbij nemen, tenminste als hij zelf nog goesting had. Sportieve en nog steeds snelle piloot.

Eigenlijk te oud om nog echt mee te doen voor de grote prijzen maar op enthousiasme en ervaring en puur talent wel nog steeds beter dan 75% van de grid.
Ik hoop dat beiden nog een prachtig 2021 tegemoet gaan en het gros van het veld laten zien hoe kwaliteit altijd kwaliteit zal blijven, zelfs als het oud begint te worden.

Wat een rare titel... ik dacht meteen dat Kimi de slaapkamer van Mika betrad met enkel een sok aan. Niet om z'n voet zeg maar. Dat soort verrassing zat ik aan te denken.
