Bottas onthult truc om zelfvertrouwen hoog te houden

Valtteri Bottas komt totaal niet over als een ijdel, arrogant of zelfs narcistisch individu. Toch heeft de Fin toegegeven dat zijn appartement in Monaco vol hangt met foto's van hemzelf.

Het is Valtteri Bottas nog niet gelukt om de échte klus te klaren: Lewis Hamilton van de troon te stoten en een wereldkampioenschap te pakken naast de Brit. Waar Valtteri in 2019 als tweede finishte in het klassement, zal dat in het huidige seizoen waarschijnlijk ook weer zo zijn. De motivatie hoog houden terwijl je naast één van de beste Formule 1-coureurs aller tijden rijdt is niet eenvoudig, maar Bottas zijn partner Tiffany Cromwell - professioneel fietser en kundig in mind-management - schijnt daar een trucje voor te hebben.

"Ik zou echt niet weten wat Lewis anders zou kunnen doen ten opzichten van Valtteri", zo vertelt Tiffany. "Het enige wat ik kan doen is Valtteri er aan herinneren hoe goed hij is, wat hij heeft bereikt en dat dat los staat van wat Lewis aan het doen is."

Om deze motivatietruc concreet te maken heeft Tiffany iets bijzonders gedaan. "Één ding wat Tiffany heeft gedaan was best wel indrukwekkend. Ze heeft foto's van al mijn overwinningen over de gehele muur in ons appartement gehangen", zo onthult Bottas. "Ze zei tegen me: wanneer je er naar kijkt dan besef je precies waar je tot in staat bent! En ik moet zeggen dat het werkt, want wanneer ik na een slecht weekend thuiskom en naar die foto's kijk dan denk ik 'Ah inderdaad, die heb ik weten te winnen!'', zo sluit Bottas af.

Hij vreet zijn banden veel sneller op dan Lewis en laat het mede daardoor regelmatig afweten in de race. Daarnaast maakt hij foutjes als hij onder druk staat.

Bottas is wellicht een van de meest onderschatte coureurs. Verschillen tussen hem en Hamilton zijn meestal binnen 0,2 per ronde of zelfs minder - wat op zich in a way acceptabel is als je bedenkt hoe goed Hamilton is(of is Hamilton wellicht niet zo goed? Ehhmm, nee, hij is gewoon goed). Op zijn goede dagen verslaat hij zelfs Hamilton, op zijn minder goede dagen blijft hij echter in buurt binnen 0,1 - 0,2. Op zeer slechte dagen, een paar keer per jaar, is het verschil rond halve seconde.
Niet dat ik ze vergelijk maar als ik naar Albon kijk dan heeft hij, zo te zien, alleen maar zeer slechte dagen.

  Hij rijdt al voor het vierde seizoen in verreweg de beste auto van het veld en heeft nog altijd pas 9 overwinningen gepakt. Ter vergelijking: Rosberg heeft in de laatste 3 seizoenen dat die naast Hamilton reed 19 overwinningen gepakt. (En dan hebben we sindsdien nog meer races ook).
  
  Dus nee, ik geloof niet dat Bottas een onderschatte coureur is.

  Eigenlijk is Bottas geen goede coureur. Als je bekijkt dat hij 8 overwinningen heeft behaald in een periode waarin Hamilton er 40 (tel maar na) heeft gehaald en Verstappen er ook 8 heeft gehaald (Spanje niet meegerekend omdat ik het over vanaf 2017 heb), dan doe je het gewoon slecht.
  In het materiaal waarin Bottas rijdt, moet hij beter kunnen. Met een zelfde mindset en hetzelfde talent als Hamilton, had Verstappen zelfs maar 1 of 2 overwinningen kunnen hebben.
  
  Bottas is een perfecte tweede rijder. Iets waar Red Bull ook naar op zoek zou moeten zijn. Een goede wingman die tactisch voordeel kan geven. En meer is hij niet. Ook niet voor Mercedes. Anders hadden ze het tactisch wel anders gespeeld op Imola en was niet Hamilton zo overduidelijk naar voren geschoven van 3 naar 1.

kijk, dat is dus weer een compleet verkeerde aanpak, vind je het gek dat het niks wordt..
als ik Vallteri was dan had ik juist foto's van Lewis in m'n appartement, eentje op het dartbord, eentje in de wc pot, eentje...

  Ik zou zeggen ook een foto van Lewis in zijn slaapkamer, zal wellicht ook in a way motiverend zijn, Tiffany gaat zeker niet klagen dan.

Gelukkig zijn de appartementjes in Monaco allen redelijk klein.....dan heb je niet veel overwinning foto's nodig om snel vol te hangen .
