Antonio Giovinazzi: "Kimi Raikkonen is de beste in het managen van een race"

Antonio Giovinazzi denkt niet dat Kimi Raikkonen het tempo van de Formule 1 niet meer aan kan. De Italiaanse coureur meent zelfs dat hij een “perfect weekend” nodig heeft om zijn teamgenoot bij Alfa Romeo te verslaan.

De coureurs van het team van Alfa Romeo blijven ook in 2021 actief voor het team in de Formule 1. Raikkonen is inmiddels 41 jaar, terwijl zijn teamgenoot 15 jaar jonger is. De Fin is tevens de meest ervaren coureur op de huidige Formule 1-grid en ook de oudste.

Giovinazzi denkt dat, ondanks de oudere leeftijd van Kimi, de coureur in een hele goede vorm verkeerd. “In mijn ogen blijft Kimi een van de beste, of misschien wel de beste, in het managen van een race. Ik zag wat hij deed in de eerste ronde in Portimao, dat was geweldig”, zei Giovinazzi in een interview gepubliceerd door Motorsport-total.com.

"Ik heb veel journalisten horen zeggen dat hij op zijn leeftijd het einde van zijn Formule 1-carrière heeft bereikt. Maar ik kan bevestigen dat hij, elke keer dat hij naar het circuit komt, zeer gemotiveerd is en klaar om een topgevecht aan te gaan. En als ik een keer voor hem eindig, is dat alleen omdat ik een perfect weekend heb gehad. Kimi heeft veel ervaring en dat helpt enorm. Het stelt hem in staat het maximale uit de auto te halen, vooral in de race."

Beiden belangrijk

Niet alleen Kimi is belangrijk voor het schommelende Alfa Romeo, ook Giovinazzi meent dat hij een belangrijk aandeel heeft. "We zijn allebei belangrijk voor het team. Mijn resultaten hebben natuurlijk bijgedragen aan mijn contractverlenging. Wat we bereiken, bereiken we door de samenwerking die Kimi en ik onderhouden. Ik heb altijd benadrukt dat onze rijstijl vergelijkbaar is. Dat kan het team helpen om de auto sneller te ontwikkelen omdat we op dezelfde golflengte zitten als het gaat om onze opmerkingen in de bijeenkomsten.”

"We hopen onze punten een beetje te kunnen verhogen, zodat we kunnen blijven vechten voor P8 in het constructeurskampioenschap."
