Teleurgestelde Verstappen: "Overwinningen zitten er dit jaar denk ik niet meer in"

Afgelopen race-weekend, tijdens de Grand Prix van Turkije, leek het er op alsof Max Verstappen de te kloppen coureur was voor pole-position en de overwinning. De Nederlander was het snelste tijdens alle drie de trainingen, verreweg het snelste tijdens Q1, Q2 en de helft van Q3, waarna Lance Stroll kort daarna de pole voor Max zijn neus wegpikte. Na een slechte start van de Nederlander leek het er daarna op alsof hij zijn tempo terug had gevonden, maar een spin achter Sergio Perez zorgde ervoor dat zijn race eigenlijk voorbij was.

"Ook al waren de baancondities erg lastig, ik was nog steeds erg tevreden over de vrijdag", zo vertelt Verstappen. "De balans was erg goed. We hadden erg veel momentum over het hele weekend, dus het was voor iedereen een teleurstellend resultaat toen we als zesde over de finish reden", aldus Verstappen.

"We hadden wat problemen met het feit dat we de achterbanden veel sneller opvraten dan andere teams", zo vertelt Verstappen verder. "Niet alleen ik, maar ook heel het team was teleurgesteld na Turkije want we komen hier maar met één doel: winnen."

Ook kijkt Verstappen vooruit naar de komende drie races die nog resteren in 2020. "Ik verwacht niet dat we zulke baancondities nog een keer gaan meemaken, dus de komende races zullen waarschijnlijk wel weer een voorspelbaar resultaat produceren", zo verwacht de Nederlander.

De komende drie races vinden inderdaad plaats op banen waar Red Bull Racing al sinds 2013 niet meer heeft weten te winnen. Met name het circuit in Bahrein ligt de Nederlander statistisch gezien niet heel lekker. In 2017 en 2018 finishte Max niet, en in 2019 reed de Nederlander een erg eenzame race op de vierde plek.

Max gelooft er niet meer in; Toto heeft aangegeven geen gas terug te nemen. Wordt dus optocht in de woestijn. Hoe heet zoiets; karavaan geloof ik? ;-)
