Haas: "Kan zomaar zijn dat vader Mazepin ook sponsor van het team wordt"

Gunther Steiner heeft zijn beslissing verdedigd om Nikita Mazepin voor 2021 en daarna te contracteren en ontkende dat zijn Russische vader Dmitry het kleine Amerikaanse team koopt.

Steiner werd uitgedaagd om er iets over te zeggen, aangezien in de paddock niet iedereen een hoge pet op heeft van Mazepin: "Mazepin staat derde in de Formule 2, Yuki Tsunoda is vijfde. Red Bull wil Tsunoda meenemen naar de Formule 1 en ik denk niet dat ze iets verkeerds doen, net als ik niets verkeerds doe met de keus voor Nikita."

Mazepin heeft een reputatie opgebouwd als 'pay driver' vanwege zijn rijke vader, wiens bedrijf Uralkali vorig jaar probeerde Racing Point te kopen. Dit mislukte echter, waarover vader Dmitry nog altijd een juridische strijd voert.

Maar Steiner ontkent dat de Russen nu Haas zullen kopen. "Het team is niet te koop, dus er valt niets te kopen", drong hij aan.

Critici wijzen er echter op dat Mazepin senior bekend staat om het financieel verdedigen van de carrière van zijn zoon, onder meer doordat hij miljoenen heeft betaald om Dmitry over twee weken te laten testen in de Mercedes van Hamilton.

Uralkali

Steiner sluit niet uit dat Uralkali nu mogelijk sponsor van het team wordt. "Ik heb al een tijdje contact met meneer Mazepin. Hij is goed bekend in de Formule 1. Vorig jaar bespraken we hoe het ging met Nikita. De onderhandelingen duurden even, maar er was geen druk. Toen we besloten om van coureur te wisselen, dachten we aan hem en nu heeft hij bij ons getekend."

"Van buitenaf lijkt de situatie ingewikkelder dan ze in werkelijkheid is."

Wat betreft Mazepin die Haas sponsort, geeft Steiner echter toe: "Haas heeft naam gemaakt in de Formule 1, maar we zijn natuurlijk op zoek naar commerciële partners. Dmitry Mazepin heeft een bedrijf, dus als alles goed gaat en hij wil ons sponsoren, waarom niet?"

  Haha ja viel mij ook op. Bij Lance en Lawrence Stroll kan ik het me voorstellen dat er even op de late middag een fout gemaakt wordt. Nikita en Dmitri is toch wel flink verschillend haha

Dat hij derde staat is mooi voor dit verhaal maar verder heeft het alles met geld te maken. Niets om je voor te schamen want zo werkt deze sport nou eenmaal. Tuurlijk wordt het team over gekocht binnen aanzienbare tijd, Gene vind dat ook niet zo erg gezien de laatste jaren. Ik ben benieuwd hoe Mazepin het doet, Stroll heeft mijn vertrouwen wel snel gewonnen dus wie weet..

Ondanks de negativiteit en ook ondanks dat ze een stoeltje weghouden van misschien wel betere jonge rijders moeten we gewoon blij zijn met gemiddelde rijders als Latifi, Mazepin en Stroll. Rijkeluisjongens die het ver hebben kunnen schoppen. Okay dan. Met hulp van de pegelementen. Maar ze hebben ondertussen 3 teams gered van de ondergang. Zonder die 3 teams zouden er 15 auto's overblijven. Welke echte talenten zouden dan niet de F1 halen?

Mijn vermoeden heb ik al eerder uitgesproken dat Haas indien ze stoppen door het aantrekken van Mazepin een potentiele koper voor het team hebben. Ik denk dat het geld van papa Mazepin hem ook geholpen heeft met zijn misdragingen in tijdens de racerij, want het is absurd dat hij toen zo een slappe straf gekregen heeft.
Ik vind verder nog altijd dat men bij Haas het stoeltje voor Perez had moeten vrijhouden, die zie ik namelijk nog niet naar RBR gaan. En een jaartje er tussenuit vind ik ook niet zo verstandig, de F1 vergeet iemand heel snel.
