Mick Schumacher kan Grosjean in Abu Dhabi vervangen bij Haas

Mick Schumacher zou eerder dan verwacht zijn Formule 1-debuut kunnen maken. Haas maakte woensdag eindelijk het langverwachte nieuws bekend over de 21-jarige zoon van Michael Schumacher die in 2021 gaat racen voor het Amerikaanse team.

Het team publiceerde prompt beelden van Schumacher zittend in de 2020 auto van Haas, voorafgaand aan zijn geplande vrije training op vrijdag volgende week in Abu Dhabi.

De geruchten doken meteen op dat de jonge Duitser in de seizoensfinale van 2020 de geblesseerde Romain Grosjean zou kunnen vervangen.

Schumacher zelf zegt dat dit niet het geval is: "De vrije training in Abu Dhabi was al veel eerder besloten, ruim voordat Romain zijn ongeluk kreeg."

Hij zei echter dat hij klaar zou zijn om te racen. "Wat de auto ook is, ik wil gewoon racen. Ik zou de drie vrije trainingen hebben, maar het zou nog steeds een uitdaging zijn", zei Schumacher.

Grosjean verliet woensdag echter het ziekenhuis en is vastbesloten om in Abu Dhabi te racen voor wat vrijwel zeker zijn laatste Grand Prix ooit zal worden.

"Als de doktoren me vertellen dat het niet mogelijk is, dan is het niet mogelijk", zei hij tegen Franse media. "Maar ik zei tegen mijn vrouw Marion dat ik het moest proberen. Ik moet egoïstisch zijn en proberen het te doen."
