Pietro Fittipaldi dolgelukkig: "Het was fantastisch en spannend"

Voor de kleinzoon van Formule 1-legende Emerson Fittipaldi, Pietro Fittipaldi, was het een droom die uitkwam -racen in de Formule 1-. De reservecoureur van Haas F1 heeft wel een aantal test gedaan in de bolides van Haas, maar tot een echt raceweekend kwam het niet. Door het coronavirus werden zijn kansen natuurlijk groter, maar daardoor kreeg hij de kans niet.

Haas-coureur Romain Grosjean kreeg vorig weekend een verschrikkelijke crash. Hij reed vol in de muur en er ontstond een grote vuurexplosie. De coureur kon maar net op tijd ontsnappen uit zijn bolide, maar kwam er niet zonder kleerscheuren vanaf. Hij liep een aantal brandwonden op, hierdoor kon hij dit weekend niet racen.

Haas had al snel een vervanger, namelijk de test- en reservecoureur van het team. Pietro Fittipaldi mocht gisteren voor het eerst de bolide van Haas besturen voor een raceweekend. Daar blikte hij met veel trots op terug. “Het was gisteren fantastisch en spannend. Het is een jaar geleden dat ik in een Formule 1-auto heb gereden, acht maanden geleden dat ik iets op het circuit heb gereden. Ik nam de dag stap voor stap, ik bleef gewoon gefocust en kalm”, zo vertelde hij tegenover Sky Sports.

Alleen in FP1 een kleine fout

Gelukkig staat hij er niet alleen voor, zijn team helpt hem met alles. “Ik was erg blij met de dag, het team heeft me overal bij geholpen, de engineers hebben me geweldig door de dag heen geholpen en de monteurs hebben het ook geweldig gedaan. De enige tegenslag was in FP1, we hadden een lock-up waardoor mijn banden beschadigd raakten, ik kon niet verder met het programma. Ik bleef kalm en we gingen gewoon naar FP2 en haalden ons runplan volgens schema. Tijdens de derde training zal ik nog een stap zetten, langzaam de motor opschroeven en pushen als het gaat om kwalificatie en dan om de race.”
