Perez door de jaren heen: 2011, veelbelovend ondanks vele technische mankementen

Sergio Perez zal volgend jaar naast Max Verstappen komen te rijden bij het team van Red Bull Racing. Daar vervangt hij Alexander Albon, die een tegenvallend seizoen kende. Het is de bedoeling dat het team, met behulp van Perez, het gat naar Mercedes beter kan dichten. In deze reeks artikelen neemt GPtoday u mee door de Formule 1-carrière van Sergio Perez.

Op 4 oktober 2010 kondigde Sauber aan dat Sergio Perez in 2011 voor het Zwitserse team zou gaan rijden. Daarbij verving de Mexicaan Nick Heidfeld. Het was de vijfde Mexicaan die in de Formule 1 zou gaan rijden. Ook werd er duidelijk gemaakt dat Perez onderdeel zou uitmaken van de Ferrari Driver Academy.

Perez wist tijdens zijn eerste race op een indrukwekkende wijze zevende te finishen bij de Grand Prix van Australië, en wist critici gelijk te imponeren door maar één pitstop te maken. Echter, hij mocht dit resultaat niet behouden wanneer naar buiten werd gebracht dat beide Saubers een illegale achtervleugel zouden hebben gebruikt.

Een zelfde resultaat op de baan zou lang uitblijven; de race er na kreeg hij stukken van een andere auto in zijn elektrische circuit, daarna volgde een 17e en 14e plaats. Daarna, tijdens de Grand Prix van Spanje, wist hij pas met een negende plaats zijn eerste WK-punten te scoren.

Tijdens Q3 in Monaco wist Perez heftig te crashen. Volgens de teambaas van Sauber was Perez nog wel bij bewustzijn, maar klaagde wel over hevige pijn in zijn benen. De Mexicaan mocht vanwege medische redenen niet meedoen aan de race de dag er na, en ook het race-weekend er na in Canada was hij nog niet fit genoeg, en werd vervangen door Pedro De La Rosa.

Na de terugkeer naar het Europese deel van het seizoen wist slechts eenmalig punten te scoren in Groot-Brittannië, met een beste resultaat van zevende op Silverstone. De rest van de Europese races werden gekenmerkt door veel technische mankementen.

Zijn échte run van succes kwam bij het Aziatische deel van het seizoen, met een tiende plek in Singapore, een achtste plek in Japan en een tiende plek in India, wat al met al goed was voor 14 WK-punten en daarmee een 16e plek in het klassement.

Halverwege het 2011-seizoen werd bekend gemaakt dat Perez zou worden behouden voor het 2012-seizoen. Ook testte hij voor Ferrari dat jaar, en reed in de SF60 (de 2009-wagen) naast Jules Bianchi.
