Sergio Perez zal volgend jaar naast Max Verstappen komen te rijden bij het team van Red Bull Racing. Daar vervangt hij Alexander Albon, die een tegenvallend seizoen kende. Het is de bedoeling dat het team, met behulp van Perez, het gat naar Mercedes beter kan dichten. In deze reeks artikelen neemt GPtoday u mee door de Formule 1-carrière van Sergio Perez.

Het 2016-seizoen kende voor Force India een trage start door een niet-competitieve VJM09, en Sergio Perez wist alleen in Rusland punten te scoren met een negende plek.

De ommekeer kwam pas bij Barcelona waar Perez - vanwege flink wat upgrades van het team - zevende wist te finishen. Dit resultaat bevestigde voorlopig dat de upgrades gewerkt zouden hebben.

In Monaco wist Perez op briljante wijze zijn zesde (en voor zijn team het vierde) podium te behalen, door op hardere banden een snellere Sebastian Vettel achter zich te houden.

Tijdens de Europese Grand Prix op het stratencircuit van Baku wist Perez ook weer de show te stelen. Ondanks een crash in de vrije training met schade aan zijn versnellingsbak - en dus een gridstraf van 5 plekken - wist hij zijn VJM09 op de eerste startrij te kwalificeren, maar startte dus als zevende. Al gauw wist hij veel plekken goed te maken en haalde de Ferrari van Kimi Raikkonen in tijdens de allerlaatste ronde - goed voor zijn tweede podium in drie races.

De rest van de toegeeflijk niet-noemenswaardige races werden gekenmerkt als - op twee uitvalbeurten in Oostenrijk en Hongarije na - stille puntenfinishes, met een vierde plek in Brazilië als beste resultaat in de tweede seizoenshelft.

Dit zorgde ervoor dat Force India Williams voorbij kon gaan in het klassement, en de vierde plaats daarmee verzekerde - het beste resultaat voor het team toentertijd.

Aan het einde van het seizoen werd bekend gemaakt dat Perez zijn teamgenoot Nico Hulkenberg zou vertrekken naar Renault, wat betekende dat het stoeltje naast de Mexicaan leeg was. Esteban Ocon, die halverwege het 2016 seizoen voor Manor Racing Team kwam rijden, werd bevestigd als nieuwe teamgenoot van Sergio Perez.
