Red Bull staat ervoor open om Alexander Albon uit te lenen

Alexander Albon is door de komst van Sergio Perez naar Red Bull Racing veroordeeld tot een rol op de reservebank. De 24-jarige Thai moest voor 2021 genoegen nemen met de positie van test- en reserverijder voor beide Formule 1-teams van Red Bull. Mocht een van de andere renstallen echter aankloppen om van zijn diensten gebruik te maken, dan zal Red Bull zich niet al te moeilijk opstellen.

Dat blijkt uit de woorden van Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko tegenover Autosport. Albon mag dan in zijn eerste jaar bij Red Bull Racing geen geweldige indruk achtergelaten hebben, de leiding van het concern heeft het vertrouwen in hem nog niet definitief verloren. Vandaar dat hij een contract als test- en reservecoureur voor Red Bull Racing en Scuderia Alpha Tauri kreeg.

Voor komend seizoen zit er voor Albon niks anders op dan hopen dat een mogelijkheid zich aandient zodat hij zich kan bewijzen. Marko: "De kans bestaat dat we hem nodig gaan hebben. We gaan hem sowieso veelvuldig inzetten voor tests. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan tests met de banden voor 2022, dat zijn aparte testsessies en daar kunnen we Alexander goed voor gebruiken."

"Daarnaast zal hij veel in de simulator plaatsnemen en een hoop Grands Prix bijwonen als reservecoureur, aangezien we met Red Bull Racing en Scuderia Alpha Tauri vier auto's hebben. Bovendien zijn we bereid om hem uit te lenen aan een ander team, als daar een situatie ontstaat dat ze op korte termijn een coureur nodig hebben. Dit is dus niet het einde voor Alexander."

Nico Hülkenberg

Dat het scenario om ergens in te vallen in het huidige coronatijdperk niet ondenkbeeldig is, daar kan bijvoorbeeld Nico Hülkenberg over meepraten. De Duitser mocht het afgelopen seizoen meermaals opdraven bij Racing Point omdat een van de reguliere coureurs Sergio Perez en Lance Stroll uitgeschakeld was. Dit deed Hülkenberg naar behoren, maar het leverde hem geen stoeltje op voor 2021.

Om de spanning aan de top weer enigszins terug te brengen stel ik voor Om Albon aan te wijzen als vervanger van Hamilton mocht Lewis alsnog ermee gaan stoppen.
