Eerste race bij Renault drukte Ricciardo met neus op de feiten

Daniel Ricciardo verliet Red Bull Racing eind 2018 om zijn geluk te beproeven bij het fabrieksteam van Renault. Ongetwijfeld ging de Australiër dat avontuur in met de hoop om de Franse renstal richting de top te stuwen. Dat is niet helemaal uitgepakt zoals hij het voor ogen had. Toch bewaart Ricciardo ook mooie herinneringen aan zijn periode bij Renault.

Voor 2021 heeft hij zich verbonden aan McLaren. Ricciardo hielp Renault dit jaar aan twee podiumplekken en ook teamgenoot Esteban Ocon eindigde een keer op het ereschavot. Nooit eerder in het hybride tijdperk scoorde het team zoveel punten als dit jaar, en toch eindigde de Franse renstal in het constructeurskampioenschap 'slechts' als vijfde.

Maar Renault moest van heel ver komen, stelt Ricciardo. "Mijn eerste race bij het team zal me altijd bijblijven. De race verliep frustrerend en de kwalificatie was ook al niet best geweest. Dat weekend werden we met de neus op de feiten gedrukt, we hadden nog bergen werk te verzetten. Je moet dat soort moeilijke momenten koesteren, dan waardeer je de mooie momenten meer."

"Als je dan kijkt hoeveel we veranderd hebben, hoeveel we onszelf verbeterd hebben en hoeveel meer zelfvertrouwen het team heeft, dan voelt die eerste race als een eeuwigheid geleden. Het is wel belangrijk om te onthouden, want het is een bewijs van hoe ver we gekomen zijn. En die eerste podiumplek samen, op de Nürburgring, springt er uiteraard uit. Cyril Abiteboul ging tekeer van blijdschap over de boordradio, iedereen was zo opgelucht. Dat was geweldig."

Volgend jaar rijdt Ricciardo samen met Lando Norris voor McLaren. Renault, dat de naam verandert in Alpine, heeft tweevoudig wereldkampioen Fernando Alonso gestrikt voor een comeback naast Esteban Ocon.

Ik verwacht dat Renault qua ontwikkeling nog wel wat stappen zal gaan maken, maar ik vraag me wel af in hoeverre Alonso input geeft aan het team waar ze mee verder kunnen. Dat schijnt in het verleden nooit zijn sterkste punt geweest te zijn en van Ocon ben ik ook nog niet overtuigd wat dat betreft.
Zou me dus niet verbazen als ze met deze combinatie van coureurs niet zo snel vooruit komen als ze waarop ze hopen.

  Een kuil met putdeksel ook alonso gaat ze niks brengen ze kunnen daar geen goede mensen krijgen die liggen allemaal langdurig vast
