Toto Wolff miste wijze raad van vriend Niki Lauda dit jaar

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff was afgelopen seizoen graag te rade gegaan bij zijn oude vriend Niki Lauda. De Oostenrijker is dit jaar geregeld overmand geweest door het gevoel dat zijn in 2019 overleden landgenoot hem met wijze raad had kunnen helpen. Bijzonder, aangezien Mercedes in 2020 weer oppermachtig was en dertien van de zeventien races wist te winnen.

Toch waren er veel momenten dat de gedachten van Wolff uitgingen naar Lauda. "Ik miste hem dit jaar meer dan ooit. Vorig jaar verkeerde ik na zijn dood nog in een soort shock en bleef ik maar gaan. Pas aan het eind van 2019 daalde het besef in dat mijn goede vriend Niki er niet meer was. Mijn reismaatje en vertrouwenspersoon was er niet meer. De structuur die we samen hadden opgebouwd bepaalde voor een groot deel mijn leven; samen vliegen, discussiëren en dineren bijvoorbeeld."

"Niki verliet het circuit altijd rond vier of vijf uur en dan kwam ik om acht uur aan om samen te eten. Steevast zat hij dan met zijn iPad en liet hij weten dat hij zich al een uur zat te vervelen. In de ochtend ging hij al naar het circuit voordat er iets van catering was, hij hield ervan om de eerste stint voor zijn rekening te nemen en dan kwam ik voor de tweede stint. Ik mis hem oprecht, vooral als vriend maar ook als vertrouwenspersoon."

Wolff was in 2020 meer op zichzelf aangewezen. "Er zijn dit jaar regelmatig situaties geweest waarin ik hem graag om zijn mening had gevraagd. Maar het gekke is, nu vraag ik mezelf wat Niki ergens van zou vinden en dan komt het antwoord vanzelf in me op. Hij was altijd duidelijk en direct, hij draaide nergens omheen. Als ik hem iets vroeg, antwoordde hij steeds vol overtuiging wat we volgens hem moesten doen."

Niki was een bijzondere man. Een man die decennia lang in geleende tijd leefde en die tijd op een prachtige manier wist in te vullen. Het is voor Toto een groot verlies maar wat doe je eraan. De Corona pandemie was voor Niki met zijn getransplanteerde longen sowieso al een dramatische tijd geweest waarin hij zelfs in thuis quarantaine nooit helemaal veilig zou zijn geweest. Het is goed zo.

De beste raad sloeg hij in de wind die Toto. Niki wilde dat RBR een Mercedes PU kreeg, dat was goed voor de sport volgens Niki. En wat had hij gelijk. Nu 7 jaar later hebben we een bijna doodsteek van de klasse gezien door de dominantie van Mercedes, en die is nog lang niet voorbij. Voor de sport was dat het allerbeste geweest en dat wist Niki.

  Klopt maar Niki was een racer en een liefhebber. Toto is een manager en heeft zichzelf lief.

"Bijzonder, aangezien Mercedes in 2020 weer oppermachtig was en dertien van de zeventien races wist te winnen." En dan mag je iemand zijn advies niet missen? Advies van iemand als Lauda zal Wolff altijd missen. Niet alleen omdat Lauda intelligent was, maar ook omdat hij nou eenmaal gewend was om advies te ontvangen van Lauda.

Ongeacht de leeftijd zorgde hij altijd voor meer kleur voor de sport. Ook de fans missen hem :(

Dat is waarom er een historie bestaat ,het kerkhof ligt vol met mensen die niet gemist kunnen worden en toch draaid de wereld door.En in de F1 geld het motto " de show must go one"
