Jean Todt waarschuwt: "Ook in 2021 geen normaal seizoen"

Wie denkt dat het Formule 1-seizoen 2021 een normaal verloop zal kennen, zal bedrogen uitkomen. Die waarschuwing heeft Jean Todt, voorzitter van de internationale autosportbond FIA, alvast afgegeven. Hoewel diverse landen reeds begonnen zijn met vaccineren, zal het nog wel even duren voordat het coronavirus echt geen invloed meer kan uitoefenen op de kalender.

De eerste donderwolken pakken zich al samen boven de Grand Prix van Australië, de voor 21 maart gepland staande seizoensopener. Todt stelt: "Het is nog niet voorbij. Het is niet zo dat we nu 2020 hebben afgesloten en opnieuw kunnen beginnen, want lockdowns, restricties en het virus zijn er nog gewoon. Er is wel vooruitgang geboekt. De eerste vaccins worden inmiddels uitgerold onder de bevolking en dat is een mooie ontwikkeling."

Maar we zijn er nog lang niet, vervolgt Todt. "Ik verwacht echter nog de nodige veranderingen aan de diverse sportkalenders. Niet alleen in de Formule 1, maar in allerlei takken van sport. Ooit zullen we terugkeren naar normaal, al denk ik dat het leven na Covid-19 wel anders zal zijn. Maar 2021 zal ook geen normaal seizoen worden, zeker de eerste helft van het jaar niet."

Creativiteit

De Formule 1 heeft in 2020 bewezen dat ze goed met die onzekerheid om kunnen gaan, aldus Todt. "Het was een geweldige jaargang, met veel creativiteit. Wie had eind 2019 kunnen bevroeden dat we drie races in Italië zouden houden, er back-to-back races zouden plaatsvinden in Oostenrijk en op Silverstone en Turkije en de Nürburgring terug zouden keren op de kalender?"

"Daar verdient de Formule 1 alle lof voor. Daarbij wil ik ook de nadruk leggen op de rol die Chase Carey als directeur van de koningsklasse van de autosport heeft gespeeld. Hij heeft zich een ware leider van de Formule 1 getoond. Samen met de FIA is de Formule 1 erin geslaagd om een omgeving te creëren waarin het aantal besmettingen tot een absoluut minimum beperkt is gebleven."

Wat had Jean Todt dan gedacht dat alles opeens anders zou zijn in 2021, nogmaals het wordt gewoon nog 1 jaar zoals 2020, hopen op normaal jaar in 2022.

  Ik denk dat Todt maar al te goed beseft dat het allemaal nog even ver van normaal zal lopen. Goed dat hij dit even ook de bevestigd in dit interview, want sommige fans leken er van uit te gaan dat we een normaal seizoen tegemoet gingen.
  
  Als Melbourne nu al op wankelen staat mag je er al van uit gaan dat er nog wat wijzigingen volgen.
