Jacques Villeneuve trekt van leer tegen opleidingsprogramma van Ferrari

Oud Formule 1-coureur Jacques Villeneuve vindt het opleidingsprogramma van Ferrari weinig toegevoegde waarde hebben. De talenten die de voorbije jaren in het traject opgenomen zijn, zouden ook zonder hulp van de Scuderia gekomen zijn waar ze nu zijn, stelt de wereldkampioen van 1997 op Sky Italia. Charles Leclerc is wat hem betreft de enige uitzondering.

Villeneuve betoogt: "Afgezien van Charles Leclerc hebben alle talenten uit het programma van Ferrari genoeg geld om zelf hun boontjes te doppen. Alleen Charles Leclerc had moeite met de financiering. Vroeg of laat moeten al deze talenten een volgende stap zetten, maar voor hen geldt dat zij ook zonder Ferrari zouden zitten waar ze nu zitten."

Mick Schumacher

Komend seizoen maakt een volgend Ferrari-talent zijn opwachting in de Formule 1, namelijk Mick Schumacher. Zoon van een legendarische coureur, Jacques Villeneuve weet precies hoe dat voelt. Hij kan zich dan ook aardig in Mick Schumacher verplaatsen. "Mick staat door zijn beroemde achternaam al jaren onder druk. Dat is het grote verschil met generatiegenoten."

"Die achternaam helpt en opent deuren die voor anderen gesloten blijven, maar gaat ook gepaard met hoge verwachtingen en dus de nodige druk. Mensen willen gelijk resultaten van je zien en vanuit de media krijg je steeds vragen over je vader. Het is lastig om daarop te antwoorden, bijvoorbeeld als je de vraag krijgt wie je wilt bedanken na een goede race. De pers wil dan graag horen dat je je vader bedankt, maar dat is moeilijk voor Mick", aldus Villeneuve.

De Canadees is benieuwd hoe Mick Schumacher het komend seizoen voor de dag gaat komen. "De voorbije jaren heeft hij het goed gedaan. Maar in de Formule 1 begin je weer van nul en moet je jezelf helemaal opnieuw bewijzen."

  Het zou Villeneuve sieren als hij even met Mick een paar woorden wisselt voorafgaand aan het debuut van Mick. Natuurlijk is hij niet de enige zoon van een F1-coureur, maar waarschijnlijk wel de enige wiens vader hem net zo'n loodzware erfenis heeft nagelaten.
  
  In één ding heeft Jacques gelijk: in de F1 begin je op 0. Voor het oog van de wereld.

Wel apart, is Villeneuve stiekem Damon Hill met een masker op? De wereldkampioen van 96...

Persoonlijk was ik ook meer gecharmeerd van Ilott en Schwartzmann dan van Schumacher, maar ik wens hem het beste. Vooral lastig dat je met Mazepin ernaast komend jaar niet veel kan zeggen over hoe goed of slecht de snelheid is. Maar dat gaan we vanzelf zien. Ik gun Schummietje het beste.

Het opleidingsprogramma van Ferrari doet het eigenlijk te goed, want ze hadden het afgelopen jaar 3 coureurs die het goed deden in de F2. De coureur met de meeste punten is nu gepromoveerd, maar ik twijfel ook of hij daadwerkelijk de beste van de 3 was.
Het is jammer dat Mazepin naast Schumacher zit, want dat is niet echt goed vergelijkingsmateriaal. Had hier liever een meer ervaren teamgenoot gezien.
