Minder inhaalacties in 2020 dan in 2019 en in 2018

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2020 leverde genoeg spectaculaire momenten op, maar onderaan de streep is er vorig jaar toch minder ingehaald dan de jaren daarvoor. Dat het totaal aantal inhaalacties lager lag dan in voorgaande jaargangen is niet zo verwonderlijk, aangezien het vanwege corona ingekorte seizoen minder races telde. Maar ook gemiddeld lag het aantal inhaalacties lager dan in 2019 en in 2018.

Auto Motor und Sport berekende dat er gemiddeld per Grand Prix 31,4 keer is ingehaald. Het totaal aantal inhaalacties over het seizoen 2020 kwam uit op 534. De Grand Prix van Portugal was met 58 inhaalacties een positieve uitschieter. In 2018 en in 2019 werd echter vaker ingehaald, respectievelijk 32,6 en 38,9 keer gemiddeld per race. Het aantal pitstops lag in 2020 ongeveer gelijk aan 2019; 30,5 pitstops gemiddeld per race ten opzichte van 30,9 pitstops gemiddeld per race.

Verklaring

Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen heeft wel een verklaring voor de afname in het aantal inhaalacties. "We weten allemaal wat het probleem is. Met deze auto's is het nagenoeg onmogelijk om een andere deelnemer in te halen, in ieder geval op sommige circuits die we bezoeken. Dat is ook waarom de meeste rijders een een-stop strategie hanteren."

Daar komt bij dat coureurs voorzichtig aan moeten doen om de banden te ontlasten en brandstof te sparen. Verstappen heeft ook wel een idee om de situatie te verbeteren. "De brandstoftanks zijn niet groot genoeg om voldoende brandstof mee te nemen om tot het einde toe aan te vallen. Het lijkt mij dat als ze het gewicht van de wagens zouden verlagen, dat al een hele verbetering zou zijn."
