Christian Horner: "Red Bull heeft sponsoren van Perez niet nodig"

Red Bull heeft de financiële steun die Sergio Perez uit Mexico kan halen niet nodig. Dat zegt Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner, nadat Red Bull besloot om voormalig Racing Point-coureur Perez voor 2021 te contracteren omdat hij denkt de Mexicaan wel in staat is om Max Verstappen meer te kunnen pushen dan Alex Albon.

Sommigen media hebben gespeculeerd dat Red Bull ook het financiële pakket van de ervaren 30-jarige, geleid door de Mexicaanse miljardair Carlos Slim, interessant vond.

"Red Bull is daar niet van afhankelijk van. Perez zijn populariteit in met name Latijns-Amerika en Mexico zal de komende maanden aan de orde komen."

Horner zei dat Perez's populariteit ongekend was voor een aankondiging van een Red Bull-coureur. "De interesse rond zijn aankondiging was de grootste die we ooit bij Red Bull hebben gekend. Het is geweldig dat de Formule 1 zo populair is, en we hebben natuurlijk veel meer platformen tot onze beschikking dan jaren geleden", zo zei hij tegen RacingNews365.nl.

"We hebben een enorme groei gezien in het verkeer vanuit Latijns-Amerika, wat goed is voor de Formule 1", voegde Horner eraan toe.

    Die aandacht uit Latijns Amerika is voor Red Bull als afzetmarkt veel belangrijker dan de Sponsormiljoenen van Carlos Slim. Ben benieuwd of ze die ook echt niet aannemen om deze niet op de auto te willen hebben bijvoorbeeld. Helm en overall van Perez is natuurlijk een andere zaak.

      Er zal vast een stickertje op de auto geplakt worden om die miljoenen van Slim binnen te hengelen. Ik bedoel, waarom zou je er nee tegen zeggen?
      Het is immers geen concurrerend bedrijf en ook niet één met een slechte reputatie (bij mijn weten), dus dan kan het verder geen kwaad.

      Maar wel lekker is het om wat extra publiciteit te krijgen uit zo'n groot deel van de wereld. Hij is de enige coureur uit Zuid- & Midden-Amerika die in de F1 rijdt. (Pietro Fittipaldi even buiten beschouwing latend). En nu hij ook nog racewinnaar is, zal de aandacht enorm toenemen daar. Dus is dit commercieel wel een heel lekker moment voor Red Bull om hem op te pikken.

      Maar het belangrijkste is uiteraard dat hij dichterbij Verstappen blijft dan Albon deed.

      @Patrace, "Het is immers geen concurrerend bedrijf". Is denk ik niet helemaal waar als je kijkt naar de andere sponsoren van RBR, Er staat al heel lang AT&T op de RB´s. En AT&T en Telcel zijn weldegelijk (zeker in Mexico) concurrenten van elkaar.

      Perez is gewend aan een vorstelijk salaris, veel meer dan andere rijders als Gasly en Albon kregen. Red Bull heeft altijd een dik betaalde coureur en een junior gehad. Toen Max en Daniel nog samen reden was Daniel de ‘dik betaalde’ en Max de junior. Ook Perez ontvangt vanuit Red Bull geen topsalaris, maar daar kan hij zijn persoonlijke sponsoren voor gebruiken. En met een top-auto onder zijn kont is Perez allang tevreden. Overigens heeft Max natuurlijk ook een paar persoonlijke sponsoren (zoals Jumbo) die zorgen voor een extra pay cheque

    Als ik me niet vergis was een (groot) deel van dat sponsorgeld sowieso bedoeld voor het salaris van Sergio, dus van dat deel van het geld ziet RBR weinig terug. Uiteraard bespaart hen dat dus op de salariskosten, maar volgens mij heeft RBR überhaupt weinig problemen met de financiële middelen.

      Dan niet eens te vergeten dat Red Bull zelf bepaald welke stickers er op hun auto's komen , want die sponsoren willen er wel wat reclame op de auto's voor terug zien
