Ross Brawn blijft aan als sportief directeur van de Formule 1

Ross Brawn zet zijn werk als hoofd van de sportieve afdeling van de Formule 1 voort. De 66-jarige Brit heeft daarover een akkoord bereikt met Liberty Media, meldt Racefans.net. Brawn trad vier jaar geleden aan als sportief directeur en is geestelijk vader van de ingrijpende reglementswijzigingen voor 2022. De nieuwe regels hadden eigenlijk dit jaar al van kracht moeten zijn.

Door de uitbraak van het coronavirus is besloten om de invoering ervan een jaar uit te stellen. Brawn wil sowieso dat moment meemaken en dus blijft hij aan als sportief directeur. "Ik ben erg opgewonden over de uitdagingen waar we momenteel mee te maken hebben. Het zou frustrerend zijn om niet te kunnen aanschouwen hoe het met de nieuwe auto's gaat", aldus Brawn.

De Brit maakte deel uit van een directieteam dat verder bestond uit Chase Carey en Sean Bratches. Brawn is daar nog als enige van over. Sinds begin dit jaar heeft hij gezelschap gekregen van Stefano Domenicali, die het stokje overnam van Carey. Hij kent de Italiaan nog uit hun gezamenlijke periode bij Ferrari en fungeert voorlopig als belangrijkste aanspreekpunt voor de nieuwe Formule 1-directeur.

"Met de komst van Stefano heb ik besloten om ook mijn contract te verlengen", vervolgt Brawn. "Door Covid-19 en alle andere uitdagingen waar we onze tanden in moeten zetten ben ik tot op het bot gemotiveerd en wil ik door blijven gaan. Op een gegeven moment zal ook ik moeten stoppen, maar zover is het nog niet. Na het vertrek van Chase was continuïteit sowieso belangrijk en ik ga met alle plezier verder met mijn werk."
