Ricciardo onder de indruk van McLaren-fabriek: "Lijkt wel NASA"

Het McLaren Technology Centre heeft een overweldigende eerste indruk achtergelaten op de nieuwe McLaren-coureur Daniel Ricciardo. De Australiër vergeleek de fabriek van zijn nieuwe werkgever in Woking met een ruimtestation. "Nu ik hier ben, voelt het pas echt. Het is geweldig, het lijkt wel NASA", verwees hij naar de instantie verantwoordelijk voor het Amerikaanse ruimtevaartprogramma.

Ricciardo kreeg deze week een rondleiding door de fabriek en verrichte een seatfitting in de cockpit van de nieuwe MCL35M. "Zelfs vandaag de dag ziet het er nog fantastisch uit. Ik kan me niet voorstellen hoe het geweest moet zijn om hier rond te lopen toen het net gebouwd was", stamelde hij over het in 2001 geopende McLaren Technology Centre.

Tijdens de rondleiding kwam Ricciardo een van zijn favoriete Formule 1-auto's aller tijden tegen; de McLaren MP4-4 uit 1988, een van de pronkstukken van McLaren. De Britse renstal won dat jaar vijftien van de zestien races, plus de wereldtitel met Ayrton Senna. "Behoorlijk ontzagwekkend", zei Ricciardo terwijl hij zijn blikken over de in de Marlboro-kleuren wit en rood gespoten bolide liet gaan.

    McLaren was in de periode 2005-2010 wel heel extreem in het nieuwste van het nieuwste aan te schaffen. Vooral 2007-2008 was er naar mijn mening geen team op de paddock zo gelikt als Mclaren.

    De jaren daarna zijn ze op een aantal vlakken ingehaald, maar de fabriek blijft een pareltje. Alleen jammer van de outdatet windtunnel, maar daar komt volgend jaar een vervanger voor meende ik.

      Ron Dennis was nogal een liefhebber van een ultra clean werkomgeving. Alles en iedereen moest in het grijze regime mee. Alleen het kantoor van Newey week af van de huisstijl, tot afgrijzen van Ron Dennis.

      McLaren had ook altijd de gekste dingen. Ze hadden watergekoelde pakken voor de monteurs (die overigens al snel werden afgeschreven), speciaal ontworpen kleding om het zaakje koel te houden en zo waren er nog veel meer dingen. Het enige wat er in die periode ontbrak was Schumacher.

    Altijd leuk die PR stukjes.. Maar moet zeggen, het McLaren gebouw is wel mooi en doet inderdaad een beetje denken aan een of ander HQ uit een scifi film..
