Giovinazzi fan van F1-sprintraces op zaterdag

Plannen voor sprintraces op zaterdag kregen brede steun van alle partijen tijdens de videoconferentie van de F1-commissie op donderdag. De nieuwe F1-CEO Stefano Domenicali onthulde onlangs zijn streven naar een proef van drie races volgens het nieuwe weekendformat, naar verluidt met een kortere race op zaterdag en een kwalificatiesessie op vrijdag.

Bronnen suggereren dat er punten zullen worden toegekend voor de sprintrace, met als gevolg dat de startvolgorde voor de normale Grand Prix op zondag hiermee ook wordt bepaalt door de uitslag van die sprintrace. Aangenomen wordt dat Domenicali wil dat het format in 2021 drie keer wordt getest; in Montreal, Monza en Brazilië.

Alfa Romeo-coureur Antonio Giovinazzi zei over de bijeenkomst: "Dit zijn belangrijke uren. Daar wordt een besluit over genomen."

"Ik had een vergelijkbare ervaring in de Formule 2, maar het was iets anders. Ik vind dit idee echter niet erg. F1 heeft altijd al nieuwe dingen willen proberen en laten we eens kijken wat er gebeurt. Het zou zeker leuk zijn om twee races in Monza te hebben, dat is zeker", glimlachte Giovinazzi.

De FIA zei in een verklaring dat alle tien de teams donderdag 'het grote belang inzagen van het betrekken van fans op nieuwe en innovatieve manieren om een nog spannender weekendformule te garanderen'.

Er werd een werkgroep opgericht die zal komen tot een "definitieve beslissing" over het al dan niet doorgaan vóór de start van het kampioenschap in 2021 volgende maand.

Monza is nou juist zo'n baan waar je normaliter meer kan genieten van het publiek dan van de race zelf.

  Monza is alleen leuk als.er iemand eens een afslag mist, of een inrijverbod negeert...
  Maar effe serieus, er wordt steeds gezegd dat je in Monza makkelijk in kan halen, zelfs de teams zitten hier vaak hun gridpenalties uit, terwijl de praktijk het tegendeel bewijst. Door de low-downforce achtervleugels waar elk team mee rijdt is de invloed van drs vrijwel nihil, wat het inhalen flink bemoeilijkt.
