Daniel Ricciardo ligt voor de komende drie jaar vast bij McLaren

Daniel Ricciardo heeft de lengte van zijn contract bij McLaren prijsgegeven. De Australiër heeft zich in elk geval tot en met 2023 aan de Britse renstal verbonden, zo laat de zevenvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar aan het blad Formule 1 weten. Ricciardo: "Ik kan het wel gewoon verklappen: ik lig voor drie jaar vast bij McLaren. Lang genoeg om er hier een flinke draai aan te geven!"

Als hij deze verbintenis uitdient, dan blijft hij al een jaar langer dan bij zijn vorige werkgever Renault. Ricciardo stond de afgelopen twee seizoenen in dienst bij het fabrieksteam van het Franse merk. Daarvoor reed hij vijf jaar lang voor Red Bull Racing. In 2018 was hij al eens benaderd door McLaren, maar toen koos hij voor Renault. "Ik heb het gevoel dat ik hier kom op het moment dat het team een lekker momentum te pakken heeft", zegt Ricciardo nu.

Daar heeft de Australiër gelijk in. McLaren heeft de voorbije twee seizoenen een behoorlijk stijgende lijn tentoongespreid, met de derde plaats in het constructeurskampioenschap in 2020 als beloning. Dat geeft Ricciardo het nodige vertrouwen met het oog op de toekomst. Niet dat hij al wist dat McLaren vorig seizoen zo goed zou draaien; toen hij tekende, moest het seizoen 2020 namelijk nog beginnen.

Ricciardo: "Toen we een paar jaar geleden met elkaar spraken, zaten teambaas Andreas Seidl en technisch directeur James Key hier nog niet bij McLaren. Ze waren toen nog volop bezig om een nieuwe basis te leggen. Inmiddels staat die structuur, en pas ik hier als puzzelstukje in de puzzel, in plaats van dat ik de puzzel zelf moet leggen."

"Ik voel me er goed over. Ik heb natuurlijk ook geen glazen bol en weet ook niet hoe het hier uitpakt, maar weet wel dat dit team de afgelopen jaren al het juiste heeft gedaan om zich klaar te maken voor de regelrevolutie van 2022. Dat is de grootste verandering in de Formule 1 sinds ik meedoe, en ik ben vind het spannend om te zien waar het heengaat met McLaren. Ik geloof echt in dit team."

en andere zitjes bij eventueel betere teams worden opgeslokt door jonkies.

Dat lijkt er dan op dat Daniel bij McLaren zijn wk aspiraties wil gaan waarmaken; 3 jaar is toch een behoorlijke termijn. Geeft ruimte om gezamenlijk te gaan bouwen naar de top.

  En dan is dat 'eventueel' nog maar afwachten want McLaren kan zomaar eens een grote bedreiging worden voor het WK.

  Realistisch gezien wordt McLaren nooit wereldkampioen met de huidige motoren formule. Zeker niet gezien de enorme voorsprong die Mercedes afgelopen seizoen had en daarmee ook dit jaar zal hebben. Kijk dan ook naar de middelen die McLaren heeft en het budget tegenover Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull. En kijk ook naar het gegeven dat er klantentrams genoeg zijn geweest met een huidige generatie Mercedes motor, incluis McLaren zelf, die allen niet konden strijden voor het kampioenschap.
  Pas wanneer het budget plafond echt impact gaat hebben (twee jaar na invoering) en wanneer er nieuwe motoren zijn in combinatie met de dan reeds uitgekristalliseerde aero van de nieuwe auto's, maakt McLaren serieus kans. Dus dat zal pas zijn in een eventuele tweede termijn van Ricciardo bij het team.
  Neemt niet weg dat McLaren een fris en opgeleefd team is. Één waar Ricciardo perfect bij past. Ik hoop dat hij daar veel successen mag boeken.

Doet ie goed die RIC. Ik heb er ook best hoge verwachtingen van, mede gezien de stijgende lijn van de afgelopen 2 seizoenen. Ben benieuwd of ze het de top lastig kunnen gaan maken. Zou mooi zijn als er eindelijk weer wat extra strijd om de podiumplaatsen ontstaat.
