Officieel: Fittipaldi ook in 2021 test- en reserverijder bij Haas F1

Pietro Fittipaldi fungeert ook komend seizoen als test- en reservecoureur bij Haas F1 Team. De Amerikaanse renstal heeft het contract van de 24-jarige Braziliaan verlengd. De kleinzoon van oud Formule 1-rijder Emerson Fittipaldi is al sinds 2019 verbonden aan Haas F1 en mocht afgelopen seizoen in de laatste twee Grands Prix opdraven als de vervanger van de geblesseerde Romain Grosjean. In 2021 zal het zijn taak zijn om Mick Schumacher en Nikita Mazepin te ondersteunen.

Haas F1-teambaas Günther Steiner: "Het doet ons veel plezier om onze samenwerking met Pietro te verlengen. De rol van test- en reserverijder betekent dat je op het laatste moment opgeroepen kunt worden om te racen, zoals met Pietro gebeurde na Bahrein 2020. Ondanks de uitdagingen die gepaard gaan met rijden met weinig voorbereidingstijd, heeft hij het solide gedaan voor ons, zeker als je bedenkt dat hij nog niet getest had met de VF-20. Hij deed wat van hem gevraagd werd. Die ervaring is een toegevoegde waarde die hij nu met zich meebrengt en we kijken ernaar uit om Pietro ook komend seizoen aan boord te hebben."

Fittipaldi: "Ik ben heel blij om mijn derde jaar bij Haas F1 Team in te gaan. Ik ben Günther en Gene Haas dankbaar dat ze me opnieuw de kans geven. Ik werk nu al een aantal jaar met dezelfde engineers en het voelt bij Haas F1 echt als één grote familie. Het is een groot plezier om te blijven werken voor dit team. Door de twee races die ik vorig jaar heb mogen rijden, heb ik waardevolle ervaring opgedaan en hierdoor denk ik nog meer bij te kunnen dragen in mijn werkzaamheden voor het team. Ik verheug me na deze aankondiging nog meer op het nieuwe seizoen."

Ze rijden (helaas) toch stijf achteraan dit seizoen dus zoveel maakt het allemaal niet uit. Hopelijk dat ze in 2022 weer een beetje mee kunnen doen al is het maar omdat ik het Gunther zo gun.

Goed om een Braziliaan te hebben in the F1. Waar is de tijd gebleven dat we vele Braziliaanse talenten hadden?

De naam Fittipaldi is ook altijd mooi in de F1, al is het langs het circuit meer dan er op.

Leuk! Ik ken Pietro persoonlijk.. dus mijn mening is misschien gekleurd.

Maar Pietro is qua talent een F1 waardig talent, zeer professioneel, en daarbij een hele leuke gast. Een eigen persoontje.

Ik vindt dat hij het ook echt verdient dat hij opstapje richting een racezitje heeft gekregen. Hij doet het financieel misschien via zijn naam, maar het talent is er ook zéker! Hoe hij het deed met een hopeloze Haas in zinn debuut, weinig op aan te merken.

Ik hoop stiekem dat Mazepin snel door het ijs zakt en dat Pietro zinn kans voor meerdere races gaat krijgen. Ik zie hem 20x liever op de grid dan die doirgedraaide Rus.

Ik vind het vooral leuk om de naam Fittipaldi te horen, maar deze jongen heeft nu niet het cv waar je normaliter mee in de F1 geraakt. Ik kende hem helemaal niet, dus heb even op wiki gekeken: zijn meest aansprekende wapenfeit in open wheel racing is een Formula Renault 3.5-titel in 2017.

Waar die serie echter vroeger nog weleens de GP2 oversteeg qua moeilijkheidsgraad, was dit het laatste jaar dat het gehouden werd. Renault had zich teruggetrokken en vele rijders en teams hadden hun heil reeds elders gezocht. De enige twee andere bekende rijders van dat jaar zijn Tatiana Calderon en Roy Nissany. Tja..

Het betwijfel ten zeerste dat Fittipaldi beter is dan Mazepin. Veelzeggend in dit verband is het recente artikel op RF 'How Pietro Fittipaldi narrowly qualified for his F1 debut this weekend' van 20 november 2020. Daarin valt te lezen hoe Fittipaldi met veel kunst- en vliegwerk en hulp van de mannen achter de groene tafel met moeite de 40 benodigde punten voor zijn licentie heeft behaald.
