Haas schrapte plan om Grosjean te sponsoren na horrorcrash

Gene Haas heeft serieus overwogen om coureur Romain Grosjean financieel bij te staan bij diens entree in de Amerikaanse IndyCar Series. Het huiveringwekkende ongeluk dat Grosjean tijdens de Grand Prix van Bahrein meemaakte, bracht daar verandering in. De Fransman mocht van geluk spreken dat hij die crash overleefde en daarom trok Gene Haas zijn plannen voor sponsoring in.

De Amerikaanse zakenman vertelde aan Racer: "Romain had me gevraagd of ik zijn IndyCar-avontuur eventueel zou willen sponsoren en in het begin stond ik daar wel voor open. Maar toen crashte hij in Bahrein en was ik gewoon zo blij dat hij levend uit dat wrak kroop. De auto was gereduceerd tot een hoopje schroot, maar ik was dolgelukkig dat Romain het overleefd had."

"Romain heeft een vrouw en drie kinderen. Ik heb hem toen laten weten dat ik hem geen geld zou geven om zichzelf vervolgens dood te rijden. Ik was van mening dat hij thuis moest blijven, lekker bij zijn gezin. Hij is in Bahrein aan de dood ontsnapt. Als de wagen net een paar graden anders was gekanteld, dan had Romain er niet uit kunnen kruipen en was hij levend verbrand."

"Hij heeft dus heel erg veel geluk gehad. En het team heeft extreem veel geluk gehad. Ik kan me gewoon niet voorstellen hoe het zou zijn geweest om een weduwe en drie kinderen te moeten mededelen dat hun man en vader er niet meer is. Dat kon en wilde ik niet meer doen. Dus toen heb ik Romain laten weten dat ik hem niet zou helpen bij zijn IndyCar-plannen."

Ik snap het maar een klein beetje (hij heeft het lot getart etc) en Gene moet daar lekker zijn eigen invulling aan geven.

Maar vindt Gene het dan niet erg om tegen de familie Schumacher mee te moeten delen dat Mick is verongelukt?? Gene geeft Mick immers de kans om zich dood te rijden? Waarom is... [Lees verder]

  Maar vindt Gene het dan niet erg om tegen de familie Schumacher mee te moeten delen dat Mick is verongelukt?? Gene geeft Mick immers de kans om zich dood te rijden? Waarom is de sponsering vor Grosjean zo anders als het in staat stellen om twee coureurs F1 te laten rijden?

  Ik vind het een beetje dubbel, en vind dat Haas de beslissing van Grosjean om toch in de Indycar te willen racen (op de levensgevaarlijke ovals na) best had kunnen steunen. Zijn vrouw en familie vinden dat blijkbaar geen probleem, dus zou Gene dat ook niet moeten vinden.

Iedereen weet en verwacht dat Romain de betonnen vangrails in de Indycar niet of amper overleefd.
Ik zou mijn vingers daar ook niet aan branden. Romain daarentegen snapt het nog steeds niet. Die denkt nog steeds dat hij een geweldige coureur is die de auto onder controle heeft. Straks is hij dood of zwaar gehandicapt en denkt iedereen “zie je wel”.
Ik vind het gewoon respectloos naar zijn vrouw en kinderen. Terecht dat Gene er geen cent meer in stopt.

  helemaal mee eens....soms moet je mensen tegen zichzelf beschermen.
  Ericsson doet natuurlijk ook mee met de Indy league....dus 1+1+2

  Een coureur die zo lang als Grosjean op dit niveau gereden heeft is zondermeer een geweldige coureur. Hij heeft inderdaad in zijn carrière enkele dubieuze ongevallen gehad, maar zo ken ik er nog wel een paar ;-)
  Ik verwacht dat Romain het niet slecht zal doen in de Indycar.

  Mwoah, Grosjean leeft blijkbaar naast zijn gezin ook voor het racen. Je moet je afvragen hoe hij thuis is als hij niet meer kan/mag racen. Je bent wat je bent, en dat heeft voeding nodig.

Respect voor Gene Haas! Goed dat hij Grosjean ronduit heeft gezegd dat hij nooit meer moet gaan racen. Volledig mee eens!
