Mercedes schuift met personeel vanwege budgetplafond

De invoering van het budgetlimiet stelt de grote Formule 1-teams voor problemen. Ze moeten hun personeelsbestand flink inkrimpen, op papier in ieder geval. Ferrari heeft het bijvoorbeeld opgelost door werknemers toe te wijzen aan klantenteam Haas F1 en aan het nieuwe Le Mans Hypercar-project voor 2023. Op die manier hoefde de Scuderia niemand te ontslaan.

Mercedes pakt het op een soortgelijke wijze aan. De Duitse renstal schuift ook met personeel, al bestaan er geen plannen voor deelname aan de 24 uur van Le Mans onder de nieuwe Hypercar-reglementen. "Op dit moment staat dat niet op de planning", bevestigde teambaas Toto Wolff tegenover Autosprint.

Gelukkig beschikt Mercedes ook nog over een Formule E-team, volgens Wolff een 'broedplaats voor business en een bestemming voor overbodig Formule 1-personeel'. Daarnaast heeft de Duitse renstal een nieuwe afdeling in het leven geroepen, genaamd 'Applied Science'. Die afdeling gaat zich bekommeren om projecten als de America's Cup (belangrijke zeilwedstrijd) en de Tour de France (samen met sponsor Ineos). "We hebben het vrij druk", lachte Wolff.

De Mercedes-teambaas bekende tegenover Speedweek.com dat het budgetplafond een behoorlijke impact op zijn team heeft gehad. "Maar het bood ons ook de mogelijkheid om onze structuur en filosofie opnieuw te overdenken. Daarom hebben we ook de Applied Science-afdeling opgericht, om Formule 1-kennis op andere werkgebieden toe te passen. Dat speelt nu een belangrijke rol binnen ons bedrijf", aldus Wolff.

Ja, hier kon je natuurlijk op wachten. Een apart orgaan waar toepassingen worden ontwikkeld die niet exclusief voor de F1 bestemd zijn, maar daar wel voor kunnen worden gebruikt.

De FIA zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk erg gelukkig zijn met de keuze van Ferrari om naar aanleiding van de invoering van een budgetplafond weer een Le Mans-project op te starten. Dat is nu typisch een gevalletje van win-win.

Ik vraag me af hoe Mercedes-Ineos denkt hetzelfde te gaan bereiken met een Tour de France-team, but what do I know. Als ik de sommige reaguurders hier mag geloven zou Maxje nog kampioen worden in een Flintstone-auto; wellicht is Toto dezelde mening toegedaan.

  Sommige slapen lekkerder bij de gedachten dat het puur aan de auto ligt en dat Max eigenlijk de allerbeste ooit is in alles.

Ach, die mensen blijven waarschijnlijk gewoon doen voor het F1 team wat ze al deden, maar financieel vallen ze onder een andere afdeling.

  Ferrari is ook weer begonnen met een endurance project begonnen en Red Bull ook.
  
  Handig hoor, kunnen ze net als Mercedes in de boeken allemaal personeel van de F1 afdeling naar toe verhuizen, maar de FIA gaat natuurlijk never nooit kunnen controleren of Pietje nou achter zijn computer wel voor de endurance auto aan het ontwerpen is, of toch gewoon voor de F1 auto.
  
  Kortom, de grote teams omzeilen zo mooi de budgetcap.

  Nope, natuurlijk niet. Die topteams zullen echt wel iets snijden in hun uitgaven, maar verder weten die ook wel dat het team met de meeste poen vooraan meedoet.
  
  En van die motor-freeze weet je ook nu al dat Red Bull in de loop van 2022 gaat klagen dat ze achter liggen op Mercedes en dat ze ruimte willen voor extra brandstof toevoer of zoeits om zo het velries te compenseren.

  Ik vraag me dan af hoe ze de ontwikkelingskosten gaan verantwoorden? Zomaar iets op de wagen zetten zal denk ik niet on opgemerkt kunnen. Waar komt het vandaan? Wie heeft het ontwikkeld? En wat waren de kosten? Zo makkelijk lijkt het mij niet te zijn voor die teams.
