Contract Pirelli als bandenleverancier verlengd tot en met 2024

De Formule 1 heeft het contract met bandenleverancier Pirelli met één jaar verlengd, tot eind 2024. Deze verlenging is een direct gevolg van het feit dat de introductie van de 18 inch-banden met een jaar is uitgesteld. Vanwege de uitbraak van het coronavirus is besloten om de ingrijpende reglementswijzigingen, inclusief nieuw bandenformaat, niet in 2021, maar in 2022 door te voeren.

Om Pirelli toch genoeg tijd en gelegenheid te bieden om de investeringen in de nieuwe banden terug te verdienen, is besloten om het contract met de Italiaanse bandenfabrikant open te breken en er een jaar aan vast te plakken. Daardoor heeft de firma na de introductie van de nieuwe 18 inch-banden - de Formule 1 maakt dit jaar nog gebruik van 13 inch-banden - nog zeker drie jaar te gaan.

Formule 1-directeur Stefano Domenicali: "We zijn trots op onze samenwerking met Pirelli en we zijn hen dankbaar voor hun constructieve opstelling toen we onze plannen moesten wijzigen. Pirelli is zich zeer bewust van de strategische rol die de banden in de Formule 1 spelen en we weten dat zij keihard werken om te zorgen dat hun producten de best mogelijke combinatie van performance en duurzaamheid vertegenwoordigen. We kijken uit naar de start van het seizoen 2021 en verheugen ons op de nieuwe auto's en nieuwe banden in 2022."

Jean Todt, voorzitter van de internationale autosportbond FIA, voegt toe: "Ik wil de Formule 1 en Pirelli bedanken voor hun medewerking, flexibiliteit en toewijding gedurende deze moeilijke periode. Covid-19 zorgt op allerlei vlakken voor enorme uitdagingen, maar door op pragmatische wijze met elkaar samen te werken zijn we erin geslaagd om stabiliteit voor de lange termijn veilig te stellen, waardoor de Formule 1 onverminderd sterk blijft. Mede vanwege de noodzakelijke vertraging voor de nieuwe reglementen was het niet meer dan logisch om het contract met Pirelli te verlengen."

Ik had graag de aanpak van Michelin gezien. Dit hield in dat voor ieder team gekeken werd welk type band het beste bij de auto past. Zodat de band minder invloed heeft op de prestaties van de wagen.

Hierdoor krijg je een internebandenoorlog. Lijkt mij super mooi.

Ik had graag de aanpak van Michelin gezien. Dit hield in dat voor ieder team gekeken werd welk type band het beste bij de auto past. Zodat de band minder invloed heeft op de prestaties van de wagen.

Hierdoor krijg je een internebandenoorlog. Lijkt mij super mooi.

  Dat gaat dus nooit werken. De banden worden in 1 fabriek gemaakt. Hoe willen ze 30 verschillende banden compounds maken voor 1 race. En wat als de rijders in 1 team een andere samenstelling wil van het rubber. Dan kan Michelin zo maar 60 verschillende banden mee moeten nemen naar 1 race.

  Nee zo werkt het ook niet.
  
  Iedere wagen heeft zijn voorkeur voor een bepaalde type compound. Dat type moet gezocht worden
  
  En Michelin heeft het aangeboden om dat te doen. Zij zagen er wat in. Het is de formule 1 die het aan pirelli gaf.
