Bottas over geen shakedown-dag bij Mercedes: "Dat is makkelijk gezegd"

Volgens Valtteri Bottas zal er een interne review volgen waarom het team uit Brackley geen shakedown-dag heeft gehad. Het team dat dit seizoen de overduidelijke favoriet is voor de titel werd geplaagd door betrouwbaarheids-problemen in een zanderig Sakhir.

Dit jaar hebben de teams slechts drie dagen om de auto's te testen voordat het seizoen van start gaat. Natuurlijk willen de teams daarom zoveel mogelijk op de baan zijn. Echter, Bottas verloor ruim drie uur waardevolle tijd in de W12 nadat de wagen geteisterd werd door een probleem aan de versnellingsbak. In totaal wist hij maar zes ronden te rijden.

Veel teams hebben besloten om nog vóór de pre-season test een zogeheten film-dag in te plannen. Tijdens deze film-dag mag er "slechts" 100 kilometer gereden worden, maar wordt ook zeker gebruikt om te kijken of alle systemen in de auto werken naar behoren. Mercedes was de enige die besloot deze film-dag na de tests te doen.

Reflecterend op het besluit van het team om geen film-dag te doen voor de tests zei Bottas het volgende: "Het is erg makkelijk om achteraf te zeggen dat we dat wel hadden moeten doen", zo vertelt de Fin. "Natuurlijk zouden we nu concluderen dat we dat ervoor zouden hebben moeten doen, maar in het verleden was alles eigenlijk waterdicht omdat alle systemen al getest waren. We gaan nu dus intern reviewen hoe we dit volgend jaar gaan aanpakken."

Mercedes reed in totaal maar 48 ronden, terwijl eerste uitdager Red Bull Racing 139 ronden neerzette met Max Verstappen. Echter, Bottas is verzekerd van het feit dat het team uit Brackley deze achterstand nog kan inhalen gedurende de komende twee dagen. "Ik denk dat het mooie van dit jaar is dat je vanwege de budget-cap en restrictie op kilometrage we sowieso geen hele drukke planningen hadden gehad zaterdag en zondag - we kunnen de verloren tijd dus inhalen", zo concludeert Bottas.

Overmoedigheis heet zoiets, Gebeurt de beste. Als je op het punt komt dat je ervan uit gaat dat alles wel goed komt dan moet je juist harder gaan werken.

  Toto kakt niet in. Die houdt het team strak en stimuleert een cultuur van zoeken naar zelfs de kleinste verbeteringen. Dit is niet door overmoedig gedrag, dit is door onvoorziene omstandigheden. Dit team trekt dit wel recht.

Nou maak ik mij geen illusie, en zal Mercedes er over twee weken gewoon staan, maar of dat ook met (de door veel mensen voorspelde) seconde voorsprong zal zijn...??
