Menselijke fout lag ten grondslag aan mislukte pitstop Valtteri Bottas

Mercedes-coureur Valtteri Bottas zag zijn kansen om zich afgelopen zondag te mengen in de strijd om de overwinning in de Grand Prix van Bahrein definitief in rook opgaan door een mislukte pitstop. De stop van de Fin duurde maar liefst bijna elf seconden, waardoor teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton en Red Bull Racing-rijder Max Verstappen aan de horizon verdwenen.

Het team van Mercedes heeft nu een verklaring naar buiten gebracht voor de mislukte pitstop. Een menselijke fout lag daaraan ten grondslag, de monteur bij het rechtervoorwiel trok zijn wheel gun te vroeg terug. Het lijkt Mercedes niet gegund te zijn om in Bahrein strakke pitstops af te leveren, vorig jaar ging de Duitse renstal tijdens de Grand Prix van Sakhir ook al behoorlijk de mist in.

Technisch directeur James Allison legt uit: "Toen Valtteri binnen kwam voor zijn stop, zette hij de auto netjes op de juiste plek. Dat is altijd fijn voor een pitcrew, dan hoeven ze zich niet opnieuw te positioneren voordat ze aan de slag kunnen. Maar helaas ging het mis bij een van de monteurs met een wheel gun, hij draaide de wielmoer los maar haalde de wheel gun te vroeg van het wiel. Daardoor was het wiel nog niet helemaal los."

Tot overmaat van ramp raakte de wielmoer daarbij beschadigd. Bovendien schakelt de wheel gun automatisch over naar een andere stand zodra het afschroeven van de wielmoer volbracht lijkt te zijn. Dat is zo ontworpen om de pitstops zo snel mogelijk te laten verlopen, maar pakte nu in het nadeel van Bottas uit. Het resultaat was een rommelige pitstop waardoor de Fin bijna achter McLaren-coureur Lando Norris weer de baan op kwam.

  mwah, mengen om de strijd..... dat gaat meestal niet in een woord met Bottas. Die kon écht het tempo van MV en LW niet aan. Net als anders.

  Viel wel mee, hij bleef redelijk in het spoor, maar door die 8 seconden was hij natuurlijk helemaal gezien.

  inderdaad , ik vond ook dat hij nog redelijk aanhaakte voor zijn stop.
  Het valt inderdaad wel op dat Bottas altijd wat meer pech (ook in 2020) lijkt te hebben dan Lewis.
  Of het iets uitmaakt? nee want Lewis zal hij nooit aankunnen.
