Mark Webber verwacht solide seizoen van 'tovenaar' Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez gaat bij Red Bull Racing doen wat voorgangers Pierre Gasly en Alexander Albon niet lukte, namelijk zich staande houden naast teamgenoot Max Verstappen. Die verwachting leeft bij oud Formule 1-coureur Mark Webber, die zelf jarenlang voor Red Bull Racing uitkwam. De Australiër dicht Perez bijzondere kwaliteiten op gebied van bandenverbruik toe.

In de On the Marbles-podcast verkondigde Webber: "Ik denk dat Sergio het goed gaat doen, hij bevindt zich in een win-win situatie. Hij is duidelijk aangetrokken om Max te ondersteunen en ik verwacht dat hij die rol beter in gaat vullen dan de twee voor hem. Sergio is een tovenaar met banden. Als hij op dreef is, berg je dan maar. Dus zodra hij gewend is geraakt aan de auto en het klikt in elkaar, is de kans groot dat hij een solide seizoen zal beleven."

Het eerste weekend in dienst van Red Bull Racing leverde Perez gemengde gevoelens op. In de kwalificatie faalden de Mexicaan en zijn team door hem in Q2 niet nog een extra run op de zachte compound te laten doen. Zijn tijd op de medium compound bleek niet voldoende om door te gaan naar de top tien. In de opwarmronde voor de race viel zijn auto stil en leken zijn kansen verkeken, maar Perez knokte zich na een start vanuit de pits knap terug naar een vijfde plaats.

Webber vervolgt: "Hij moet vooraan mee gaan doen om druk op de strategie van Mercedes uit te kunnen oefenen. Zolang Red Bull Racing maar één ijzer in het vuur heeft, is dat lastiger. Ik heb een aantal constructeurstitels mogen winnen en voor een team is het al geweldig als je drie, vijf of tien seconden achter je winnende teamgenoot finisht. Dat is wat Perez moet doen. Verstappen uitdagen is een ander verhaal, maar alle ingrediënten zijn er om flink te scoren dit jaar."
