Kevin Magnussen in 2018 gepolst door Red Bull voor Toro Rosso-zitje

Kevin Magnussen is in 2018 benaderd door Red Bull om te kijken of hij te porren was voor een avontuur bij Scuderia Toro Rosso, het opleidingsteam van de energiedrankenfabrikant. Dat verkondigde de Deen afgelopen weekend al tijdens zijn rol als analist voor TV3 SPORT. In de krant BT verschafte hij verdere uitleg.

Toen Daniel Ricciardo aan Red Bull liet weten na 2018 te verkassen naar Renault, was de keuze om Pierre Gasly door te schuiven naar Red Bull Racing snel gemaakt. Red Bull zocht vervolgens een ervaren coureur om bij Scuderia Toro Rosso als ijkpunt voor de jonge talenten te fungeren. "Dat werd althans al vroeg duidelijk", aldus Magnussen over zijn contacten met Red Bull.

Tot een concrete aanbieding kwam het nooit, het bleef bij een toenaderingspoging. "Het is niet zo dat ze een contract op tafel legden of iets dergelijks, maar het was wel duidelijk een optie voor me." Magnussen legt uit waarom hij Red Bull destijds afwimpelde: "Omdat ik me goed voelde bij Haas F1 Team en de renstal zich goed ontwikkelde."

De rest is geschiedenis. Gasly verhuisde naar Red Bull Racing, Scuderia Toro Rosso ging verder met Daniil Kvyat naast Alexander Albon en Magnussen kon met Haas F1 de voorbije twee seizoenen weinig anders dan aanmodderen in de achterhoede. Misschien was het anders gelopen als de Deen wel zijn jawoord aan Red Bull had gegeven, maar dat weet je nooit.

Inmiddels is Magnussen niet meer actief in de Formule 1. Hij rijdt dit jaar in het Amerikaanse IMSA-kampioenschap en is door Peugeot ook al vastgelegd voor het Hypercar-project voor de 24 uur van Le Mans.

  De Deen is gepolst... wanneer hij een echte aanbieding had gekregen, dan had hij toch zeker wel getekend? Kom op zeg, de kans om via (toen nog) Torro Rosso door te stromen naar het grote Red Bull was best groot. Groter in ieder geval dan de kans is dat je via Haas bij Ferrari terecht zou komen zoals Romain ooit hoopte... als hij Red Bull daadwerkelijk heeft afgewezen, dan is dat echt een grote fout van hem geweest!

Jammer dan. Vond Magnussen altijd wel een mooie coureur met z'n streken. Heb zelfs weleens gezegd dat ze hem naast Max hadden moeten zetten toen, i.p.v. Gasly.
Maar zijn laatste jaar met Haas was weinig bijzonder.

  En liegen kan hij ook al niet, nee Kevin kan beter Le Mans gt3 of zo gaan doen, inclusief opleiding van ene J.Verstappen, die 2 passen wel bij elkaar 🤣
