Startnummer Sergio Perez geïnspireerd op oud-voetballer Zamorano

Red Bull Racing-coureur Sergio Perez rijdt al sinds de invoering van permanente startnummers in de Formule 1 rond met het nummer 11. De Mexicaan heeft in een video voor zijn nieuwe werkgever uitgelegd waarom hij ooit voor dat startnummer gekozen heeft.

Een oud-voetballer vormde zijn inspiratiebron. Perez: "Als kind had ik grote bewondering voor een voetballer. Zijn naam is Ivan Zamorano en hij droeg altijd het rugnummer 11. Dus toen ik begon met karten, wilde ik ook 11 als startnummer hebben. Sindsdien gebruik ik waar het kan het nummer 11. Mijn e-mailadres begint zelfs nu nog met 11…"

De permanente startnummers deden in 2014 hun intrede in de Formule 1. Daarvoor was het gebruikelijk dat de kampioen het volgende seizoen met startnummer 1 reed en diens teamgenoot met startnummer 2. Voor de rest van de startnummers diende de uitslag van het constructeurskampioenschap als volgorde.
