Alfa Romeo-coureur Antonio Giovinazzi leek zondag op weg naar punten in de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna. De Italiaan reed na de herstart van de eerste van twee thuisraces dit jaar in de top tien, maar hij moest een ongeplande pitstop maken om een van zijn brake ducts leeg te laten halen. Daarmee vervlogen zijn kansen om punten te scoren.

Pure pech, weet Giovinazzi. "De race op Imola was in het begin heel moeilijk, vrijwel onmogelijk door de spray. Ik denk dat we alles goed hebben gedaan zondag. Na de rode vlag lag ik op een positie in de punten en was ik sneller dan de coureurs voor me. Een mooi resultaat had er zeker in gezeten."

"Maar toen moest ik opeens stoppen omdat de temperatuur van een van mijn achterremmen opliep, omdat een brake duct verstopt was geraakt met een tear-off en er geen verkoelende lucht meer richting de rem ging. Dat was heel ongelukkig. Ik hoop dat ik het om kan draaien en dat we de volgende race meer geluk hebben, dan kunnen we laten zien waartoe we in staat zijn."

In de kwalificatie liep het niet echt op rolletjes voor Alfa Romeo, beide rijders werden uitgeschakeld in Q1. Giovinazzi: "Ik zei zaterdag na de kwalificatie al dat we een goede auto hadden. In de kwalificatie wisten we geen goede ronde aan elkaar te knopen en hebben we ons ware potentieel niet tentoon kunnen spreiden. We hadden misschien wel in de top tien kunnen starten, het is zaak om dat de komende races beter te doen."

  Vorige race was het een verpakking van een sandwich bij Alonso op vergelijkbare plaats.
  
  Het is bijna niet te geloven dat dergelijke prutsen een DNF kunnen veroorzaken. De teams voorzien al roostertjes op die brakeducts om dat te voorkomen maar het is geen garantie....

Oké maar zoiets kan een monteur toch verwijderen of als het gesmolten is, snel een extra gat boren.

Ik begrijp dat het niet ideaal is, maar in zo”n race waar een safety car misschien nog kon komen. Had je nog een kans gehad.
