Sergio Perez mikt op een 1-2 voor Red Bull Racing in Portugal

Na een onverwachte P2 in de kwalificatie van de Grand Prix van Emilia Romagna kende de nieuwe Red Bull Racing-coureur verder een teleurstellend weekend op het Circuito Enzo E Dino Ferrari Di Imola. De Mexicaan kon na een plek te verliezen aan Charles Leclerc geen indruk maken, en raakte na de herstart van de baan om vervolgens geen punten te kunnen scoren.

Echter, Sergio Perez was erg verbaasd over zijn P2. "Ik was erg blij over mijn vooruitgang in het team", zo vertelt Perez. "Ik was zelf erg verbaasd toen ik hoorde dat ik als tweede was gekwalificeerd, en na twee races al het meeste uit de auto te kunnen hebben gehaald."

"Als ik er aan terugdenk geeft het me veel zelfvertrouwen dat ik met een auto die zo'n andere rijstijl vereist nu al zo snel kan zijn - het toont dat ik een sterk aanpassingsvermogen heb. Ik begin de auto goed te begrijpen, en dat is waar het voor mij om draaide tijdens de eerste paar races van dit seizoen", zo vertelde Perez verder.

"Bij iedereen die van team is gewisseld zie je dat ze moeite hebben om zich aan de auto aan te passen. Iedereen is goed, iedereen is buitengewoon snel maar het is gewoon een proces waar je als coureur doorheen moet. Uiteindelijk gaat alles natuurlijk aanvoelen, en dat is precies waar ik naar op zoek ben tijdens de eerste paar races van het seizoen."

Waar Perez een enorm sterke kwalificatie kende, ging de race wat minder goed. Perez verloor een plek na de start en na de herstart spinde hij van de baan. Dit heeft uiteindelijk het team een 1-2 gekost, zo is Perez van mening. "Imola was een gemiste kans want ik denk dat een 1-2 daar zeker mogelijk was", zo kijkt Perez terug. "Hopelijk kunnen we dat dit weekend wel voor elkaar krijgen. Imola is een erg lastig circuit om onder de knie te krijgen en daarna te kunnen maximaliseren - vooral als je nieuw bent - maar in Portugal hoop ik alles uit de auto te kunnen halen en mee te doen om de overwinning", zo vertelt Perez verder.

"We weten dat de auto potentie heeft, en het doel is om naar die potentie te rijden. We weten dat de snelheid er is, we moeten simpelweg aan onze vorm werken om die volgende stap te kunnen zetten", zo concludeerde Sergio Perez.

Jeetje wat was die fout (of naja het waren fouten, maar de laatste werd Perez fataal) in Imola zonde zeg. Perez had eigenlijk gewoon minimaal 3e moeten worden, en dan had de druk er ook een beetje af geweest denk ik.

Euh nee, Sergio, je hebt niet naar Christian geluisterd. Think: "underdog. underdog". Dat wordt dus ook een spoedcursus naar Cesar Millan, ben ik bang ;-)

Kijk dit is taal. Laat Horner en Wolff maar roepen dat ze de ander beter vinden. Gewoon zelfvertrouwen hebben en er vol voor gaan, Anders ga je dit Mercedes nooit verslaan. Ik verwacht dat ome Helmut nog wel met een voorspelling komt dat RB de komende 3 races simpel kan winnen.

Die doet altijd ´good cop/bad cop´ Met Horner. Gewoon in de kwalificatie een 1/2tje pakken en dan Perez Hamilton laten ophouden en als eerste naar binnen. Dan heb je ze in de tang.

Na de vorige kwalificatie weet Perez voor zichzelf dat het best mogelijk is (met of zonder foutjes van Verstappen) om Verstappen te verslaan. En dat geeft natuurlijk zelfvertrouwen; zeker als je tijdens je 2e kwalificatie iets doet wat je laatste paar voorgangers niet echt gelukt was. Nu nog snel een paar podiumplekken of een overwinning en dan kan je echt tevreden terug kijken.

Het zou idd ideaal zijn als Perez een paar keer Hamilton zou weten te verslaan op zondag, maar ik zie het niet gebeuren. Hij heeft slordigheden gehad op Imola, en weet daarvan niet fatsoenlijk te herstellen, terwijl Hamilton dan juist boven zich uit steeg.
Maar het seizoen is nog lang..
