Alessandro Zanardi is bij bewustzijn en aan de beterende hand

Het gaat naar omstandigheden redelijk met oud Formule 1-coureur Alessandro Zanardi. De 54-jarige Italiaan liep vorig jaar ernstige verwondingen aan zijn hoofd en gezicht op bij een botsing met een vrachtwagen tijdens een race met handbikes.

Dat ongeluk is alweer tien maanden geleden, maar sindsdien is het behoorlijk stil gebleven rondom de toestand van Zanardi. Zijn 22-jarige zoon Niccolo doorbreekt de stilte in La Repubblica: "Mijn vader is al geruime tijd weer bij bewustzijn, al enige maanden."

"Zijn toestand verbetert geleidelijk, stap voor stap. We zijn ons er echter terdege van bewust dat hij een lange weg af te leggen heeft en dat het herstel tijd vergt. Tot nu toe kan niemand ons vertellen wat hij straks weer allemaal kan. Hij is herstellende, maar we hebben een lange weg voor de boeg. We omringen hem met steun en liefde."
