Callum Ilott: "Ik schrok van de grip op de rode band"

Alfa Romeo-coureurs Antonio Giovinazzi en Kimi Raikkonen reden allebei in de tweede sessie van de vrijdag, maar Callum Ilott reed in de eerste sessie in de auto van Giovinazzi. De Britse autocoureur, die opgeleid is door Red Bull Racing, is de nieuwe aanwinst van het team.

Ilott, de nieuwe reservecoureur van het Alfa Romeo F1-team, mocht tijdens de eerste sessie in Portugal in de wagen klimmen van Giovinazzi. Wat vond hij er eigenlijk van? “Ik vond het erg leuk om vandaag in de auto te zitten”, zo vertelde hij tegenover GPToday.net.

Hij is al wel actief geweest in een Formule 1-auto. Tijdens de rookietest in Bahrein mocht hij ook al uitkomen voor het team, maar dat is toch wat anders dan een echt raceweekend. Zijn Formule 2-kennis, de eerdere testsessie en Alfa Romeo hielpen hem met zijn debuut. “Het team maakte het me zo gemakkelijk mogelijk om mijn echte debuut uit te voeren en het was een uitstekende gelegenheid om ervaring op te doen, het meeste uit dit uur te halen en het team te helpen om gegevens voor het weekend te verzamelen.”

Het circuit in Portugal is erg hobbelig en kent moeilijke bochten. Voor Ilott was dit de ideale proef. “Dit is geen gemakkelijke baan, maar ik was in staat om bij elke run vertrouwen op te bouwen. De eerste run op de harde banden was goed en ik kreeg steeds meer vertrouwen in de bolide. Toen ik de sprong naar softs maakte, was ik verrast, omdat er een grote toename van de grip was. Ik kreeg een steeds beter gevoel in de auto. Hierdoor wist ik waar de grip zat. Al met al was het een geslaagde dag, consequent, veel rondes gemaakt en veel geleerd."

Callum Ilott gaat volgens teambaas Frederic Vasseur zijn volgende Formule 1-rit maken voor Alfa Romeo tijdens de Grand Prix van Frankrijk in juni.

Keek de afgelopen jaren graag naar de verrichtingen van Ilott. Mooie races van hem.
Ps: volgens mij zit hij in de Ferrari academy ipv bij RBR;)
