Sergio Perez levert en start pal achter teamgenoot Max Verstappen

Zo had de teamleiding van Red Bull Racing het vorig seizoen ook vaker willen zien: twee auto's van het energiedrankjes-merk vooraan het Formule 1-veld. Sergio Perez levert en stelt zeker niet teleur: tijdens de Grand Prix van Portugal start hij achter Max Verstappen op P4.

De Mexicaan zal dan ook content zijn met deze prestatie, zou je denken. Zeker gezien zijn schuiver in het tweede deel van de kwalificatie, waarbij hij een setje vers rubber naar de gallemiezen reed. De schuiver wist hij te doen vergeten, hij revancheerde zich in het derde kwalificatiedeel waarbij hij deed wat hij moest doen: kwalificeren in de buurt van Max Verstappen. Toch is Perez gereserveerd over zijn prestatie.

Sergio Perez: "Het was niet de geweldigste kwalificatie. Het was een rommelige kwalificatie wat betreft het vinden van mijn ritme en grip. Ik heb de auto er eigenlijk nooit helemaal onder gekregen tijdens deze sessie. Ik had zelfs het gevoel dat ik wat tekort schoot", vertelt Perez.

Zijn gevoel is onjuist, het is een goede presetatie te noemen dat hij op 'slechts' twee tienden van een seconde achter Max Verstappen weet te kwalificeren. Daar waar andere coureurs die afgelopen winter wisselden van team ook dit weekend nog aangeven te moeten wennen aan hun nieuwe auto en team, lijkt Perez zijn inwerkperiode wel te hebben gehad.

Perez blijft kritisch op zijn eigen presteren: "Niet echt alles werkte vandaag maar op z'n minst hebben we morgen een goede startplek voor de race. Onze racesnelheid lijkt vooral in het eerste deel van de race sneller te moeten zijn, dus hopelijk kunnen we veel druk zetten op de Mercedessen."

Ik mag ook hopen dat je als coureur niet blij bent als je er een dikke tiende achter zit. Of het nou Checo/Bottas/Lewis of Max is. Je wilt er gewoon altijd voorzitten. Dit is al een veel betere mentaliteit dan dat Albon en Gasly hadden. Die al blij waren als ze er 30 seconden achter finishten.

  In zijn derde race voor het team is dit gewoon een prima resultaat. Hoewel het gat wel aanzienlijk was geweest als Max die snelle ronde niet buiten de baan was gegaan.
  Maar goed, dat telt verder niet. Nu zit hij er slechts een dikke tiende achter en dat is gewoon goed. De komende races zal hij uiteraard proberen dat gat te verkleinen en wellicht Max te kunnen uitdagen. Als Max geen fouten maakt, dan zit hij er nog ruim voor, alleen is er tot nu toe steeds wat in de kwalificatie.
