Sebastian Vettel goed gemutst na sterke kwalificatie: tiende startplek in Portimão

Sebastian Vettel kan nog steeds snel en hard autorijden, blijkt zaterdag tijdens de kwalificatie van de Grote Prijs van Portugal. Terwijl Lance Stroll niet verder kwam dan P17 reed de viervoudig wereldkampioen voor het eerst dit seizoen de top-tien binnen tijdens de kwalificatie.

Vettel: "Er stond behoorlijk wat wind, out there. Het was lastig om de ronden aan elkaar te knopen, wij allebei worstelden. Tijdens het eerste kwalificatiedeel maakte ik een stapje vooruit en kreeg ik meer vertrouwen en toen haalde ik het van Q2 tot Q3. Dus ik ben daar behoorlijk blij mee, maar ik spring geen gat in de lucht met mijn laatste rondje want daar had meer in gezeten en ik denk dat de omstandigheden wat veranderden."

Verwachtingen voor de race heeft Vettel ook: het gaat hoe dan ook 'krap" worden. "Dus we zullen zien wat we kunnen doen", aldus Vettel.

Ralf Schumacher zei gisteren nog op de Duitse TV dat Vettel duidelijk de mindere coureur is binnen het Aston Martin-team. Vandaag blijkt de jongere broer van Michael daarin geen gelijk te hebben. Of de wanprestatie van Stroll tijdens de kwalificatie heeft gelegen aan het nieuwere materiaal waarover hij wel en Vettel niet beschikt dit weekend, is onbekend.

Hij reed best een strakke ronde moet ik zeggen, het is hem gegund. Stroll viel mij eigenlijk erg tegen, die was toch heel het weekend sneller. Ik vond het eigenlijk vreemd dat Stroll de nieuwe onderdelen kreeg. Stroll mag dan wel meer punten hebben, maar denk dat Vettel met zijn ervaring meer fee... [Lees verder]

Ik mis Vettel zijn finger,maar dit is natuurlijk wel mooi voor hem.
Als je Lance verslaat in de kwalificatie den ben je wel gewoon een héle grote.

Ik vond het eigenlijk vreemd dat Stroll de nieuwe onderdelen kreeg. Stroll mag dan wel meer punten hebben, maar denk dat Vettel met zijn ervaring meer feedback kan geven over de updates. En Stroll staat ook niet echt bekend om zijn feedback, die weet soms niet eens wat aan de hand is.

  Ik had het idee dat Vettel totaal niet bezig was met snelle tijden in de vrije trainingen. Reed lang rond, dus denk met best veel brandstof

Sterke kwalificatie van Vettel, maar ik denk dat het nadeel van de softband hem morgen buiten de punten brengt.

  Dat nadeel is geregeld geen issue. Rijders op medium moeten harder pushen om om het snelheidsverschil met de softs goed te maken wat resulteert in kortere levensduur. Of het op die circuit ook gebeurt gaan we straks zien.

  Dat is vaak het geval inderdaad, maar de coureurs lijken dit weekend erg overtuigd van het starten op medium. We gaan het zien Pietje.

  Klopt, langer doorrijden in de eerste stint leek beter uit te pakken dan vroeg stoppen zoals bijvoorbeeld Sainz deed.
