Fittipaldi over zware startcrash in IndyCar: ''Had geen ruimte meer''

Pietro Fittipaldi beleefde op zondag een ongelukkige IndyCar-wedstrijd op de Texas Motor Speedway. De vervanger van Romain Grosjean bij ovalraces veroorzaakte een zware startcrash. De Braziliaan tikte Sébastien Bourdais van achteren aan en dat leidde tot een kettingbotsing. Bolides knalden op elkaar, vlogen in de muur of over de kop. De ravage was enorm en de wedstrijd werd meteen geneutraliseerd. Pas na 20 ronden achter de safety car waren de brokstukken opgeruimd en kon de wedstrijd pas beginnen. Fittipaldi viel samen met vijf andere rijders uit.

De zoon van oud F1-kampioen Emmerson Fittipaldi legde uit wat er gebeurde: ''Ik zat bij de start achter Sébastien. Alles ging goed totdat een andere rijder midden in het veld van zijn gas af ging. Sébastien moest ook van het gas en ik had geen ruimte meer om hem te ontwijken, waarna we elkaar raakten. Ik zag dat de wagen naast me er ook last van had, maar die kon nog wel ontwijken. Wij hadden geen geluk.”

In de eerste race van het double-header-weekend reed Fittipaldi zich verdienstelijk naar de vijftiende plek en hoopte bij het tweede treffen een toptienklassering te scoren. ''Het is spijtig, want ik wilde de hele race rijden,” zei Dayle Cone Racing-coureur na afloop. ''We hadden gisteren een erg goede wagen, maar hadden zondag waarschijnlijk in de top tien kunnen eindigen. Het team heeft het zo goed gedaan, dus dit is echt balen'', sloot de teleurgestelde Fittipaldi af.

Jammer dat niet hij maar Mazepin in de Haas zit.
Ik ken Pietro, heeft gereden voor een team waar ik voor werk. Die jonge heeft veel meer talent dan de meeste mensen denken.

Bahrein 2020 deef hij het enorm goed, maar reedt een beetje onder de radar omdat alle ogen gericht waren op Russell-Mercedes.

Maar Fittipaldi deed een enorm knappe job door in zij debuut geen fouten te maken en een heel goede pace neer te leggen. Het is jammer dat de Haas niet de auto is om indruk te kunnen maken.

Hopelijk kan hij in de Indycars laten zien wat hij waard is, en kan hij via Haas wellicht ern echte kans krijgen volgend jaar ... mits Haas dan nog bestaat in de F1.
