Waarom koos Mercedes in Portugal voor mediums in Q3?

In de laatste kwalificatierun in Portimao stapte beide Mercedessen onverwacht over van softs naar de mediums. Lewis Hamilton en Valtteri Bottas kwamen echter niet meer in de buurt van hun beste tijd. James Vowles, hoofdstrateeg bij de Duitse formatie, legt uit op het YouTube-kanaal van Mercedes uit waarom er gekozen werd voor een hardere compound.

''In 2020 hebben we ook de medium band gebruikt tijdens Q3. Lewis pakte zelfs pole daarmee. De mediums en de softs presteren qua grip nagenoeg gelijk in Portimao.'' Afgelopen weekend werkte dit plannetje niet, maar dat heeft volgens Vowles een andere oorzaak. ''Dit kwam voornamelijk door de wind. Aan het einde van Q2 was de wind al krachtiger, maar in Q3 had het een groot effect op de laatste rondetijd. Tijdens de race was de wind nog niet eerder zo sterk geweest tijdens dit seizoen.''

Achteraf was de eerste run op softs voldoende voor pole. Bottas als de nummer één, 0.007 voor Hamilton. Max Verstappen dacht poleposition te grijpen, maar zijn tijd werd door track limits geschrapt.

Mercedes was een halve sec. sneller geweest op de mediumband in Q2 dan de soft in Q3. Dan is dat logisch toch om deze gok te wagen. Tekent wel de rommel van Pirelli.
