Max Verstappen wil als eerste finishen tijdens zijn 100e GP voor Red Bull Racing

Toen hij in 2016 de Spaanse Grand Prix wist te winnen tijdens zijn debuut bij Red Bull Racing verbaasde Max Verstappen de hele wereld. Als hij dit weekend de race weet te winnen, zal niemand er verbaasd over zijn.

De Limburger lijkt dit jaar namelijk over een auto te beschikken die hem het wereldkampioenschap zou kunnen doen winnen. Vooralsnog staat Lewis Hamilton acht punten voor op de Nederlander, in race-overwinningen is het 2-1 voor Hamilton.

Dit weekend is de 100ste Grand Prix die Verstappen in een Red Bull zal rijden. Hij is vol goede hoop voor de race van zondag. Terwijl er tijdens de Portugese Grand Prix veel wind stond en het asfalt weinig grip bood, zouden er aanstaand weekend normalere omstandigheden moeten zijn die een beter beeld geven van de huidige verhoudingen binnen de Formule 1.

Max Verstappen zegt tegen persbureau REUTERS: "Ik denk dat dit een goed circuit voor ons kan zijn, maar ik verwacht Mercedes ook snel te zijn hier dus het gaat heel spannend worden en het komt er gewoon op aan wie er de beste afstellingen weet te vinden"

Hamilton won al vijf keer de race op het circuit nabij Montmélo in Catalonië, waarvan de laatste vier jaar op een rij. Mocht hij dit weekend winnen dan komt op gelijke hoogte met Michael Schumacher die er vijf keer in een Ferrari en eens in een Benneton al snelste over de streep kwam.

Volgens Lewis Hamilton's enigineer Andrew Shovlin gaat het spannend worden dit weekend. "Om eerlijk te zijn verwacht ik dat het meer van hetzelfde gaat zijn. Het gaat snappend worden. Als we niet in staat zijn ze (Red Bull's) te splitsen dan kun je de race ook niet echt 'lezen'. Het gaat spannend en krap op elkaar worden", aldus Shovlin.

Ben benieuwd, al heb ik een voorgevoel dat de Mercedes er gewoon weer bijzit en er zelfs iets voor kan staan. De komende 2 races gaan iig laten zien hoe het nu echt een beetje zit. Ik verwacht op deze banen ook wel een sterk Ferrari en Mclaren.

  Max had voor kunnen staan in het kampioenschap. Maar Mercedes maakt wel een sterkere indruk. Ik hoop dat het baan afhankelijk is en het is inderdaad te hopen dat RB wat meer punten gaat pakken de komende races.

  Ze doen ook dit jaar weer weinig verkeerd bij MB. Er wordt ook logisch gewerkt, het wordt een optelsom, goede mensen, goede motor, goede coureur, logische beslissingen, zou het invloed hebben?
